Letter from Mr. Szolowicz...

October 29, 2013

Dear Ironwood Ridge High School Parents and Community:

Pride. Respect. Class. These three words define the ideals of Ironwood Ridge High School.

Unfortunately, we have received allegations of behaviors on the part of some students that do not reflect these ideals. Specifically, there are reports of derogatory, insulting and bullying language. Some of the allegations have already been verified. Other allegations are part of an ongoing investigation. As to those determined already, however, it appears that while some behaviors were unintentional, others were sadly and evidently purposeful, even malicious.

While our investigation continues, I felt it was imperative based upon what we already know to talk with students today about this important issue. So, this morning I met with the entire student body through four assemblies, one for each class year. In these assemblies, I explained the problem and cited some of the specific unacceptable and hurtful words which students are reporting. As you know, we speak of "our house" at Ironwood Ridge, and I made clear to students today that this house can only be "ours" if it is "ours" for everyone. Any language that denigrates another, be it based on race, ethnicity, religion or any other personal characteristics, is unacceptable in our house.

We should not, cannot and will not tolerate behaviors intended to belittle, bully or intimidate others. In accordance with school and district policy, disciplinary consequences will be assigned for such behaviors. Any student who has been or is the target of disrespectful or bullying behavior should report the incident to me, the administration or any teacher so that the situation can be properly addressed.

More importantly, I encouraged each student to take a stand by not accepting this type of language from themselves or their classmates. Each and every student has the right to discover and develop their individual interests and aptitudes in a safe, caring and respectful environment. Together, we can meet our ideals of pride, respect and class.

Sincerely,

Michael Szolowicz

Principal

FOOD DRIVE

The IRHS Food Drive has begun.  Last year we raised over 9,000 pounds or food and our goal for this year is 10,000 pounds!  Please have your student bring non-perishable food items to the English class.  The winning teacher will win a party for each of their classes.

This food greatly benefits the families in our community that struggle every day.
This can be one of the ways your family donates an hour a month by collecting at work and bringing food to IRHS, collecting in your neighborhood, etc.
