NPO Presentation: "Principal Szolowicz Presents..." -  April 22, 7pm

Principal Szolowicz Presents...
Monday April 22nd
7pm
Library Lecture Hall

On Monday April 22nd, NPO will host its last presentation of the school year. It is a give-and-take evening -- parents can both become better informed with changes at IRHS, and then turn around and better inform administration about their perspective.

During the first portion of the evening, Principal Szolowicz will, in the spirit of "The Movement" introduced last Fall, present an overview of accomplishments and changes from this year. In addition, he will review efforts regarding Common Core Curriculum and the upcoming PARCC assessments and the change to the bell schedule for next year. He'll also emphasize transitions to more in-depth informational text reading across the curriculum, a shift to a new model of higher level thinking, Webb's Depth of Knowledge, and some "blended learning" programs we are planning on implementing.

Following his presentation, he'll ask for small group discussion regarding three areas of particular interest to the IRHS leadership team heading into next year. ring this second portion of the meeting he wants to gather parent perspective regarding:

  • The Common Core Curriculum and PARCC Assessments
  • Parent and Teacher Collaboration for Student Success
  • Freshman Success

In each of these areas, he wants to hear from the parent's perspective what is working, what we might want to modify, and any other creative ideas to overall improve student achievement. The results of the discussions will be used as he leads the IRHS leadership team in setting goals for next year.

They need a Senior Advisory Committee Chair to facilitate a handful of meetings with next year's seniors. At these lunchtime meetings, seniors provide input into their graduation event. A current Junior parent with a flexible schedule would be ideal for this role. Contact Joyce Contrades for more info.

Principal's Corner: Recent IRHS Highlight
by IRHS Principal Mike Szolowicz

The Veteran's Heritage Project is publishing its first book of compiled veterans' testimonials, "Since You Asked."  The book is available for $25 with all proceeds going toward future publications.  Contact Don Dickenson for more information.

The IRHS academic program has been at the forefront of my agenda this past week.Notably, I'm in the process of creating the "master schedule" for next year. I'm excited about continuing our tradition of excellence and even adding to it!

The Common Core Curriculum Committee met last Wednesday.  Tami Gordon, Jen Een, Becky Scheel, Glenda Arffa, Jen Inboden and I reviewed the faculty questions from our last "early out" and used that input to narrow our focus to two major areas: informational text and Webb's Depth of Knowledge model. The multi-disciplinary committee will explore these areas in more depth including brainstorming multi-disciplinary creative possibilities for Ironwood Ridge.

Additionally, I'll continue to monitor and communicate information regarding the new PARCC assessments; impacts of Common Core on Special Education, English Language Learner students, and Advanced Placement programs; and other more related topics.

Please join me on Monday April 22 at 7pm in the IRHS Library Lecture Hall. I'll present an overview of accomplishments and changes from this year in addition to reviewing our efforts regarding Common Core Curriculum, the upcoming PARCC assessment, the change to the bell schedule, transitions to more in-depth informational text reading across the curriculum, a shift to a new model of higher level thinking, Webb's Depth of Knowledge, and some "blended learning" programs we are planning on implementing.  Following my presentation, I'll ask for small group discussion regarding three areas of particular interest to me heading into next year.  I'd like parent perspective regarding:

  • The Common Core Curriculum and PARCC Assessments
  • Parent and Teacher Collaboration for Student Success
  • Freshman Success

Enjoy the nice weather (it'll be hot soon!) and here's to a great week!

College Tip: Multiple Offers? Hmmm, How to Decide...
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg

"Water, water every where

Nor any drop to drink"

"Culturally, we place so much emphasis on how to get into colleges that we do little to prepare students to choose from among the schools that admit them. What makes criteria for choosing a college good or bad? Should you trust your gut feelings? And what if you don't have strong feelings?"

--From the article, I'm Not in Love. Courtesy of AdmissionsWise Consulting 2013

So, today's article is how to decide where to attend when offers are abounding. The five top factors are location, costs, reputation, region, size. Developing a five-star system can alleviate some of the stress and narrow one's selection.

Just like Angie's List, there are multiple inside scoops on the inner machinations of any college or university. These secondary sources are often sour grapes experiences, but if one reads enough of them, it becomes apparent that some credibility can be assigned to their meanderings.

One of the basic tenets of decision time is the overwhelming sticker shock of what the actual costs are and then sizing up the opportunity costs: e.g., do I not incur significant debt so that I may parlay financial viability for graduate school? Another significant tipping point is the location and flight costs to and from Tucson. It ain't cheap flying in and out of Denver!

I would suggest that the initial overtures of commitment include a deep analysis of how these universities facilitate the administrative aspects of your enrollment. In other words, how have they treated you up front? Is that orientation or summer bridge program going to include a vine-swing to an advisor who will be with you through the transitions?

You need that. You don't know it yet but you need a tried-and-true contact who has your back. That person will help cobble together a schedule, will ask you the correct questions about AP exam scores, will be available to negotiate a few telephone calls to Res. Life or Financial Aid when you get in a pinch. Have you met that person yet? Have you sought out how exactly academic advising looks at your schools? Usually this aspect is departmental and not general but you will not want to be a lost sheep among 2,000 other first-year students seeking out one simple answer.

Remember, if you blow through critical way stations in college, they have overly punitive responses, frequently financial but sometimes entailing an extra year in college for even a small gaff. For example, if your academic department is on a cohort system and you neglect to register for a class that comes along once in a blue moon, now you are scrambling. You will need that advisor to ensure compliance, before the proverbial mud hits the fan.

Decisions are ultimately a good thing to have. Going out of state is a great way to grow personally. You just have to think about this and really figure out where you will be best served, best educated and not left to your own devices to overlook critical junctures in your education. You will always remember the first time someone at your chosen university points to the catalog, page 426, and tells you that you should have known. So, the recommendation is that you select a school that, oh, I don't know, cares about you
.
