Principal's Corner: Recent IRHS Highlight
by IRHS Principal Mike Szolowicz
  • I recently had the privilege of attending the National Association of Secondary School Principal's conference in Washington, D.C. During that conference, I learned more about the Common Core Standards, PARCC assessments and other national educational trends. During our last early-out professional time, I shared with the faculty and staff new details about the PARCC assessments. As a faculty we continued discussion of the implications for teaching and learning at IRHS. Additionally, some teachers have joined me in a mulch-disciplinary Common Core Committee to further steer our transition.
  • Another group of teachers and I are meeting to reassess and revamp the transition from middle to high school. We are looking at some common expectations and language across our ninth grade classes.
  • In the realm of facilities, our football field is now scheduled for a serious make-over. The field will be re-sodded starting in early April. The field will be used for graduation in May; however, other field related activities will be impacted through the summer.
  • Also, with the weather warming, the use of drinking fountains is increasing. We are aware that some drinking fountains are broken. IRHS and Amphitheater maintenance are working diligently to fix the fountains.
  • Baseball won the Cowboy Up! tournament at the start of the season and are continuing a winning record.
  • Softball went 5-1 in their recent Spring Break tournament.
  • Both Girls and Boys Tennis continue their state-championship form.
  • Track and Field hosted the Amphitheater District High Schools last Wednesday and won this multi-team meet.
  • Encore Show Choir received a Superior rating at the Festival Disney Competition over spring break.
  • The All School Musical, Beauty and the Beast, is being held this coming Thursday and Friday, April and 4 and 5. Curtain at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

College Tip: Noncognitive Measures - A Trend in Admissions
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg

The essay and other resume artifacts can be crucial to gaining admission to your colleges of choice. Be aware that admissions teams are looking for notions of leadership, perseverance, integrity and maximization of opportunities available. Here are two articles that discuss the use of non-cognitive factors in the admission process:

Pitfalls exist, however, the further out university administrators stretch analysis of non-cognitive factors as tipping points in deciding who gets in and who is denied.

For example quantification of your perseverance is akin to assessing your beauty. Beauty historically has always been in the eye of the beholder. So, one person's opinion of what constitutes admirable perseverance is another person's vision of simple survival and not particularly meritorious. Writing, life was hard but I overcame sometimes wear thin after about the third stanza, especially if that is a foil to mask a low GPA and low test scores.

To distill that idea, the essay, resume and letter of recommendation rely on an emotional reaction to your efforts and accomplishments, however worthy they may have been.

Nonetheless, Nighthawks, this is how the game is trending. Now, more than ever, thinking about how you frame your accomplishments is paramount. In effect, your ACT/SAT is becoming a number, and what you did last summer is rising in importance.

Note that core high school GPA is still the best barometer of future academic success as it pertains to persistence into the college sophomore year, a significant benchmark. Work ethic can never be underestimated.

All that said, you need to know-either next year or for grad school- that at some point acceptance is going to take some crafty wordsmithing to tip the scales in your balance. The following article touches on this trend and you need to be aware of this.

Job Fair, April 12

Sponsored by AZ Daily Star and Tucson College, the "Changing Futures. Changing Lives" fair on Friday April 12 (from 12-4pm) is an opportunity to visit with various employers.
