Tidbits from the 2/18 NPO Board Meeting:

Many thanks to Oro Valley Councilmember Mary Snider for attending our last NPO board meeting. She fielded questions/concerns and highlighted city news relevant to the school community. Here are a few of the FYI's she shared: - Businessweek Magazine recently selected Oro Valley as the best city in AZ to raise a family
- the public library now is open on Sunday from 1-5pm and will soon have extended evening hours on Tues and Thurs
- Oro Valley's School Resource Officer (SRO) program (in place since the 1970s) is being nationally looked at as a model program, with "resource" rather than "officer" being the emphasis of their role
- the archery range at Naranja Park is open and drawing more attention to a public space full of possibilities (see below on how to voice your opinion about community needs and future development)
- OV Youth Advisory Council is off to a great start and will be looking for even more involvement later this year
- Due to budget and technical changes, the city has changed its communication mediums (e.g. newsletter to residents no longer mailed; old email notification system retired). To stay up to date with latest news, go here to opt into topic-specific email subscriptions.
Councilmember Snider strongly encourages all residents of OV to take the time to share their comments/concerns with the Town Council via mail, email, or speaking at a Town Council meeting(meetings are held the 1st/3rd Wed of the month; to speak simply arrive by 6pm, pull a blue card and you will be given 3 minutes to address your matter). Your voice will make an impact on Council decisions; the more specifics you give the more useful your input will be to them.
Principal Sczolowicz offered a few IRHS updates, including the final decision on next year's bell schedule. The 2013/14 school year will no longer have block days and conference period will be Wed/Thurs (instead of this year's Tues/Wed). He also noted that starting this semester, tutoring hours and the library will have greater availability going into finals (now open all the way to the start of finals, rather than closing the week before.)

Student Vehicle Use Reminders
All juniors and seniors that have parking permits need to make sure the permit they obtained is on the specific vehicle they registered. If something has changed since getting the permit and/or they changed vehicles, they need to go to the operations office and make the change to your permit paperwork to reflect the new ride. Also, please remind students that they may not be at or in their cars at any time during the day including between classes (per the student/parent handbook). This means they cannot use the parking lot to dress out for PE. Please remind them to use the luxury accommodations in our PE locker rooms to dress out.

Major Fundraiser for Amphi District Nonprofit, 3/9
We hope you are able to join the Friends of Amphi Gala on Saturday, March 9th. The Amphi Foundation Gala Committee has been very busy planning an amazing event. They've booked a great band and gathered some very cool silent auction items and school prizes. This is the Foundation's major fundraiser and our schools programs, teachers and students benefit from the proceeds. Here is the Amphi Gala invitation and Webpage to purchase tickets (scroll down the linked page). Thank you so much for all you do for our schools, teachers and students and we look forward to celebrating together on March 9th!

Principal's Corner: IRHS Highlights from Last Week
from the desk of Principal Szolowicz
Some notable community happenings last week include: - The long-awaited Student Portal is opening on a trial basis. The Student Portal provides access to grade, attendance and other information (much as the Parent Portal does) and is specific to each individual student. Students are receiving log-in information when they meet with counselors to input their next year course requests. Please note, however, that should the increased demand on our bandwidth and server prove problematic, the Student Portal may be closed again. I am very excited about the sense of academic ownership the Student Portal creates for each student.
- As was shared in this week's early-out faculty meeting, IRHS is moving to a different bell schedule next year. To better serve our teaching and learning needs, next year's schedule will see each class meeting each day for about an hour. There will be no block schedules. Additionally, conference periods will occur on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There will still be special schedules for pep assemblies, professional learning, AIMS testing and final exams.
- Congratulations to the IRHS Wrestling Team who won their third state team championship in a row (yes, a 3peat!). IRHS also had 4 individual state champions and 2 runners-up. See our Twitter feed for more details. This morning (Wednesday, February 20th at 8:15) we held an assembly to honor our champions. I am proud our wrestlers for their dedication to the "student" portion of "student-athlete." Their champion's assembly was originally scheduled for last Wednesday. However, the wrestlers requested that the assembly be moved so that they could use last Wednesday's conference period to make-up academic work they missed attending the state tournament. Their academic dedication is both special and typical of IRHS student-athletes.
- Note also that the AIMS Writing and Reading tests are the Monday and Tuesday after Rodeo Break, February 25 and 26.
Enjoy the Rodeo Break! |
College Tip: A Definitive Classic - A Must Scan for Future College Parents
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg
Alright, time to get all academic on you.
Among the pantheon of great college literature, there is no greater tome than, How College Affects Students: A Third Decade of Research (2005, Pascarella & Terenzini). This is the aftermath to their seminal book, How College Affects Students: Findings and Insights from Twenty Years of Research (1991).
I draw your attention to this book because you will find it on the shelf of every university administrator who has earned a Master's. Basically, the book is a compendium of research studies and their conclusions answering why and how the college experience is important.
Some insights are unvarnished. For instance, one study concludes that hedonism increases. Somebody got paid for that conclusion? Other studies follow the typical patterns expected from Ivory Tower academicians.
A reader review from Amazon, helpful to 6 out of 6 reads: "Pascarella and Terenzini, two of the most cited researchers in higher education, provide a wealth of information on the impact of college on students. Both volumes of How College Affects Students (published in 1991 and 2005, respectively) cover a variety of critically important student outcomes such as, cognitive and intellectual growth, psychosocial change, moral development, and career and economic impacts of college. This book is one of the most cited and well-known works in the fields of higher education and student affairs.
If you want to know about the empirical evidence on important student outcomes, there is no better book to reference. This book does not cover anecdotal conclusions about the impact of college on students - it only reviews what is known scientifically about how college affects students. A MUST READ for all higher education professionals."
So, I draw your attention to the areas mentioned above-cognitive and intellectual growth, psychological change, moral development and career and economic impacts. As you may infer, students grow new modalities of cognition, they become broader thinkers due to exposure to diverse personalities and ideas. They earn more than their counterparts with similar characteristics who did not attend college, and finally, they develop a stronger moral compass with regard to open-mindedness and acceptance of cultural and political differences.
And, again, how does this apply to College Tips? For those of you teetering on purchasing a four-year education for your child, you need to know what you're buying. Certainly, they will earn a degree in some tangible major. But in order to understand the ramifications of diving into the college experience, your child will certainly pop out of the higher education system a different -- probably a better person -- than from whence they entered.
As with most things the devil is in the details. Find this book or its primer from 1991. Take an hour or two to thumb through it. When your child comes home during that first Thanksgiving Break, you will best be able to counter their witticisms and "new" knowledge about how the world works.
