College Tip: SAT Subject Tests - Important? Find Out
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg
SAT Subject Tests. Not a very fancy name, right? I got a call last week from a surprised parent of a sophomore who fortunately was doing her research. Looking into a highly selective university on the West Coast, she learned that university requires Subject Test results. Specifically, the school is seeking science scores to help determine admissibility and, to a degree, likelihood of success at their school if admitted. Whoever said that high-stakes tests should be re-thought is correct. The fact remains, however, that, according to CollegeBoard: "Some colleges require or recommend that you take SAT Subject Tests. In addition, you can enhance your application, demonstrate knowledge you've gained outside the classroom, and potentially place out of introductory courses." Check out this site for details on how to sign up. The next Subject Test date is 01/26/13. The 12/01/12 sit is probably too late. The same paradigm for the SAT is applicable to the Subject Tests. You'll need to bone up before taking the exam(s). You'll want to focus on test-taking strategy as well as specialized terminology. As with the SAT, you are in competition with thousands of other students, so a higher score is better. For parents of underclassmen, please set your sights on some colleges now so you won't be surprised later by tricky ticky-tacky requirements. The 2013 College Handbook includes 2,200 4-year colleges and universities. That's about 1,390 pages of college requirements. Hone in on your top contenders as you watch your child's academic trajectory, and note the class rank and levels of participation in co-curriculars, Get to know the admissions criteria of both your sure-things and reaches. The lesson: Subject Tests may be important to getting admitted. It behooves you to look into admissions requirements so you don't get burnt on a technicality. |
 Notes from the NPO Board Meeting
Many thanks to IRHS Counselors Eileen Jonaitis and Dave Goldberg for headlining at the NPO meeting this past Monday. They introduced AzCIS and provided an overview of "A Day in the Life" of an IRHS counselor. Three big take-aways from the presentation:
- AzCIS is a robust, significant, statewide delivery of guidance curriculum and the counseling staff is excited about what it offers students;
- Actively ask IRHS counselors for what you and your student want and need from them. The counseling resources at IRHS require your/your student's active participation to realize their fullest potential;
- An internal locus of control is something to pay attention to and help your student develop.
Here is a copy of their presentation slides. Below are links to their handouts:
In addition to this presentation, the board: approved funds to subsidize a holiday breakfast to help bring some yummy Cracker Barrel cheer to our dedicated staff; began discussion about NPO newsletter policy, addressed parent concern about student dress code enforcement, noted that donations are significantly below last year, and attended to a handful of other business items. The NPO Board appreciates Principal Szolowicz for taking the time to participate in our board meetings; his active involvement continues to increase our effectiveness in building a stronger community for our students.

Holiday Helping Hands: IRHS Students Initiatives for the Community
Teddy Bears for Children in Hospital: Encore Show Choir along with Avon Representative Michelle Milham is selling "Curly the Bear" to help show some love to those in need. For only $19.99 you can send "Curly the Bear" to a hurting or needy child at the Tucson Ronald McDonald House or the University of Arizona Children's Hospital in your name. Please contact any Encore Show Choir member or go by the choir room and talk to Teresa Irwin. Your generous gift can make a big difference to a child or hospital patient.

Toys for victims of domestic violence: Make a child SMILE this holiday season. The People Club's Annual Holiday Toy Drive is here. Help fill the Holiday Happy Sack with $5.00 or less unwrapped toys, for boys and girls under 10 years old. Donations will be collected in all classrooms, the library, the front office and A127- Sheryl Mahnken. The toys will be given to children at The Emerge-Brewster House, a Tucson shelter for victims of domestic violence. Last year we donated over 800 toys to the Emerge- Brewster House. Please help us reach our 2012 goal of 900 toys collected. We will be collecting through December 20th, the last day of exams.
