Principal's Corner - Tax Credit Donations

The support Ironwood Ridge High School receives from parents and the community forms one of the pillars our student opportunity and achievement.

Many of our clubs and programs depend on your support including tax credit donations to provide great opportunities for students.

If you haven't made a tax credit donation yet this year, please consider doing so to support athletics, music and fine arts, student clubs, or science equipment. Here is the direct donation link

Information regarding tax credit donations can be found directly on a District webpage, and is also linked at the bottom of IRHS website's "Bookstore" link.

Also, some companies will match their employee's tax credit donation.

Thanks for all of your support!

College Tip: Western Undergraduate Exchange
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg

A plethora of universities in the western U.S. offer reduced out-of-state tuition on a limited basis.

From the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE) web page:

"Students who are residents of WICHE states are eligible to request a reduced tuition rate of 150% of resident tuition at participating two- and four-year college programs outside of their home state.

"The WUE reduced tuition rate is not automatically awarded to all eligible candidates. Many institutions limit the number of new WUE awards each academic year, so apply early!"

So, about 150 colleges and universities are possibly going to give you a financial break. Instead of 100 percent of non-resident tuition rolling onto your balance sheet, you'll get a break.

Why do they do this? Well, schools don't really want your money. Just kidding. They want your money. They also want to grow their enrollments and diversify their base. Everyone wins.

Please look over the website for details. Sometimes SAT/ACT scores and high school GPA come into the process so being part of the program is not guaranteed or predicated on the basis of being accepted.

WUE is an underground thing. From their webpage: "Apply for admission directly to the WUE institution(s) of your choice. There is no general WUE application. If the institution that you are applying to uses a hard copy application, mark prominently on the form that you seek admission at the WUE rate. For online applications, check the WUE box and if there is not one provided, contact the school admissions office on how to apply for the WUE discounted rate."

So, this stuff is kept under wraps and you have to be forthright in pursuing it. When you mention WUE (pronounced woo-ee) most admissions counselors will crane their necks like a dog hearing a shrill sound for the first time. The counselor will likely kindly ask what you're getting at and you may get ping-ponged around. Eventually, you'll end up in financial aid or with a savvy old associate director who remembers the days when IBM Selectrics whirred and clicked and transcripts were hand-written.

The program undergoes changes with some frequency. Stay tuned into your school's approach to awarding your child the tuition break. This break can be a make-or-break deal so you need to ensure you have it in the bag. Thousands of dollars are at stake.

WUE and related programs such as PSEP (professional school) and WRGP (grad students) are a simple way around just accepting standard out-of-state tuition. The break is offered to a limited number of applicants. You have to ask for it and secure it-possibly by a miracle of fate-but if you can find the proper person at your selected university or college, you'll be golden and that will leave more simoleons for souped-up cars and stuff.

Congratulation Nighthawks

Nighthawks Vanguard made heads turn at the State Marching Band Competition. Placing 11th out of about 30, they probably gave their best performance of the year. They were so very close to being in the top 10 and advancing to the Super State Championship. Way to go Nighthawks, not all bands go to the state competition, so it is prestigious to have made it that far. Vanguard worked really hard and improved a lot this season... Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Cross Country team for placing 4th in the State Championships! Notable finishes were: Cal Skilsky making the "2nd Team All State" and Melanie Zibrat, Kristin Powell and Molly Latin for making "3rd Team All State." The Cross Country team was 61 students strong. Each and everyone was a valuable part of a successful season. Way to Go Nighthawks!
