Welcome back from fall break!  Hopefully, with the start of fall, we'll also see the start of some cooler weather soon!

I'm very pleased that with the start of the new quarter we have the return of after school tutoring in Math, Science, English and Modern Languages.

The after-school tutoring program is a key "intervention" strategy to help students succeed in rigorous courses.

Some of our tutoring allows students to stop by the library and ask a teacher, such as a math teacher, any math related question the student might have.

Other tutoring, such as the Calculus and Chemistry tutoring, is available for specific programs.

Speaking of specific programs, tutoring is also available to help students meet and exceed standards on the AIMS tests.

A schedule of this quarter's after-school tutoring is available through the "Library" link on the IRHS website.

Happy learning!

Pink Out / Community Give Back Night - Friday @ Football

As part of a national campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer, there will be a "pink out" at Friday night's varsity football game against Catalina Foothills. The football boosters would like all kids and adults attending to wear some sort of pink to create the "pink out." Pink t-shirts ($10) and tanks ($12) are being sold this week at the school. In addition, everyone is asked to bring a nonperishable food items to donate to IRHS Student Government's 2012 Food Drive. There will be a canned food drive organized by Stugo for the community going on at the same time.  So please bring canned goods, wear pink, cheer loudly, and have a great time at IRHS's Community Give Back Night on October 19th. Kickoff is at 7pm.

ALERT! You will get a free GIFT if you bring 5 cans of food to the football game. Look for Stugo's Food Drive table.

New Season of Sports Beginning - Tryout & Conditioning Info

Art Club Updates, Fine Arts Booster Meeting - Oct 22 @ 5

There is a Fine Arts Booster meeting at 5pm Monday October 22 in the 2D class room. Please park in the Staff Parking lot and enter Fine Arts building from parking lot.

Parents are encouraged to join the discussion about the Art Club's participation in the upcoming OV Festival of Art show, Dec. 1-2. A Saturday work day is being planned for students to make artwork to sell in show (students keep the profits).  Parent feedback and participation is appreciated!!!

ART CLUB meets every Thursday from 3:30 to 5pm in the 2D room. All students are welcome to join. The students are working murals for Club Green and items to sell at the upcoming art show Dec. 1 and 2. We could use donations of microwave popcorn for Art Club. Also if you have any art supplies you don't use any more, please consider donating them to Art Club.

A big thanks to everyone who sent in supplies from the teachers' class wish lists! All the wonderful donations will come in handy. The teachers still need paint brushes. If you get your clothes dry cleaned, please save the plastic and send it in to school. It is great for keeping ceramic projects moist while the students are working on them.

CollegeTip
College Tip of the Week
- College IS for Students with Disabilities
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg

Too often students from all walks of life opt out of the college experience for fears unfounded: They won't admit me; I can't handle the workload; I'm not strong enough; No one there understands my circumstance.

Poppycock.

For every student who desires, there is a place in college. Your child's place may not be at the local university or the regional heavyweight, but there are slots for your kids somewhere out there so that they can have access to the technology, professors, curriculum and atmosphere that best fits their needs and aspirations.

Nearly all colleges and universities have a disabilities services department with trained staff to serve your child. At a school such as Pima Community College, where they enroll more students overall than does Arizona State University, there is nothing your child is going to throw at them that they have not already seen.

Check out this link to see how to get started with PCC. This is a muscular, fully-developed program. Yes, there are some forms, i.e., the "Proof of Disability" form, but this is SOP for colleges and universities and once you've completed some of the process, most of these things are one-offs. Note that PCC offers timelines for requesting accommodations and services. It's all there. This isn't their first rodeo. Your child, getting to a good relationship with a real person in the DSR department, is a really, really good idea. Having an advocate who can roll through some of the heavy lifting will help ensure that your child has what is needed, Day One.

So, while PCC has Disabled Student Resources, The University of Arizona has both the SALT Center and Disability Resource Center. The general catch-all at the UofA is the Disability Resource Center, known as the DRC. If you want a beefier level of support, the UofA's SALT Center offers fee-based programs. SALT is an acronym for Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques. You have to initiate a relationship with the SALT Center; they won't necessarily reach out to you. After all, this is the premier program for students with disabilities in the nation. For students using SALT services, the 6-year graduation rate hovers around 80 percent. The general population, over the same timeframe, is around 60 percent. You want your kid to graduate? Figure out how to make this program a reality in your child's tool bag and then make sure services are used.

Further, the reality is this: The UofA, Pima College and all the other schools would not have admitted your child if the admissions counselor did not have confidence that your child could make it through and graduate. If your student earns a general offer of acceptance, he or she should not only matriculate but also graduate as well. The data bear that out. And as with all graduates of a four-year college, the life-long material benefits as well as the personal sense of accomplishment last a lifetime.

Misc. Announcements...  Cards, Shoes & Rubios

IRHS All-Stars are making cards again! Cards for all occasions are on sale for only $1 in Rm A112, and also on Wednesdays during conference period in the front of the office.

Do you have extra shoes lying around? If so, Student Government is recycling shoes! Please drop them off in one of the boxes around campus. They are being donated to people around the world that need them so if you leave a note in your shoe, you may end up with a pen pal!

This Thursday evening, October 18th, there will be a swim team fundraiser at Rubio's. Students can get a coupon from any swimmer or pick one up outside of room A117.

Hip Hip Horray! IRHS Athletes Excel in Swim, Cross Country and Football

The girls swim team placed 2nd overall at the Hillenbrand High School Classic Invitational swim meet last weekend! Seven new school records were set and 11 swimmers qualified for the State Championship in November. Way to go girls!

Top 10 finishers: Melanie Zibrat 1st place, Kristin Powell 2nd place, Molly Latin 4th place, and Madelyn Roberts 9th place. For the boys, Cal Skilsky took 6th place.

After rushing for 196 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown to help Ironwood Ridge to a 42-14 win over Mountain View, Anthony Braunreiter became Marine Corps Elite Warrior of the week!! He was nominated for the award along with six other student athletes across Arizona. However, Braunreiter earned the most number of fan votes, giving him the title of Marine Corps Elite Warrior of the week. Thanks to everyone who showed support for Anthony!
