From Principal Szolowicz - Tutoring, Class Size + more

Hard to believe that we have been in school an entire month already! As we settle into the rhythm and routine of learning, a few items from the past week stood out as particularly relevant to our quest of creating a caring, comprehensive and world-class community.
- By the end of this week, the IRHS Counselors will have spoken with each senior student regarding college applications, scholarships, upcoming college fair dates, upcoming visits to IRHS by college recruiters, resumes, ACT and SAT exams, transcript ordering procedures, volunteering (often a requirement on college applications), the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and online resources including the new IRHS scholarship Facebook page IRHS Scholarships & More. Students and parents of every grade level can watch IRHS Scholarships & More, this newsletter, and the IRHS Twitter page for more college visitation and scholarship opportunities.
- Several years ago, the voters of the Amphitheater District approved an override to the Amphitheater District's budget. Part of this budget override provides funds to reduce class sizes. Since registration, IRHS is pleased to have opened 16 new sections in Math, Science, Modern Languages, English and Physical Education utilizing these funds.
- This same budget override also provides funds for the after-school tutoring program. IRHS is in the process of requesting our allocation; there's an application process involved in which we describe our proposed program, justify its need, and discuss how the program's effectiveness will be evaluated. Please watch this space and the IRHS webpage for more after-school tutoring information. In the meantime, teachers are available during Conference Period every Tuesday and Wednesday for tutoring. Additionally, we have some state provided grant funding for tutoring students who have yet to pass the Math portion of AIMS. If you're interested in Math AIMS tutoring, and your child has not yet passed the Math portion of AIMS, please contact Instructional Support Assistant Mr. A.J. Malis (696-4007).
As always, feel free to contact me at mszolowicz@amphi.com or 696-4004 if I may be of any further assistance. Here's to continuing an already premier year!

College Tip of the Week - Match & Fit in Selecting a College
by IRHS Counselor Dave Goldberg
As discussed last week in making the best use of your time at the TCC College Fair, October 16, this week's topic is Match & Fit.
Big school, big city; small school, small town; conservatory; agriculture & mining; technical; historically black; single gender; East Coast, West Coast; Canada...the possibilities are endless.
Specifically to juniors and sophomores, get out this year during your breaks and visit colleges when you vacation. In the parlance of cowboys, never take the first horse outta the barn. Instead, remember these three ideas:
- You don't have to attend the school your friends select
- You don't have to select the college your parents went to
- You don't have to attend the school that's closest to you
Of course affordability comes into play as does proximity to home. But the central idea of match and fit is the question, where will I be most successful in participating in rich, life-changing experiences and crafting an academic narrative.
After all, you are building a resume from the first day you step onto your campus. So, matching with the college culture and fitting in with the academic profile of the frosh class is paramount to positioning yourself for a successful outcome.
Nationally, only about 60% of the students entering all public US colleges and universities in Fall 2013 will graduate. Poor match and fit to blame? Maybe.
So, do what you can now to ensure you select properly on the front end. Because, at the end of the day, it will be you taking full responsibility for graduating and paying off your debt load at time of graduation, or termination of enrollment.
Next week's topic: Secrets to Winning the Scholarship Game
Editor's addendum: Here are two upcoming college fairs (and if you are aware of other nearby college fair/events, please let us know)... - October 16th (a Tuesday), TCC College Night, Tucson Convention Center, 6:30-9:00 pm (list of colleges attending; directions/more info)
- October 25th (a Thursday), Christian College Fair, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, 6:00-8:00 pm (more info/list of colleges attending)

Three Cheers!!! - IRHS Students Help the Community
Stuffing the Bus with Needed Items On Saturday, September 8th, National Honor Society members volunteered at an event called Stuff the Bus. This event's purpose was to collect used clothing for the Amphi Clothing Bank, and was held in memorial for Christina Taylor Green. It was held at Amphi High School, with live music and refreshments provided. Members from NHS helped with set up and clean up, as well as accepting donations and organizing them on the bus. On the next half day (September 25th, 2012), NHS members will be putting on a free car wash for all teachers starting around 3:30pm! This is to thank teachers for all their hard work during the year. Shopping with Underprivileged Kids Key Club is a branch of the Kiwanis organization, and is highly active in volunteering throughout the community. The club meets every other Wednesday at 8:15 in Mrs. Scrivner's room (A254). On August 18th, they had a great turn out at the biyearly Kiwanis Shopping Spree. Underprivileged kids from Keeling Elementary School were bused to JC Penney at Tucson Mall, and IRHS Key Club members helped them shop for new school clothes. The money was donated by JC Penney and Kiwanis. There will be another shopping spree in December; that date is still TBA. Key Club events this month and next include a trip to the Villas of La Canada on September 15th at 9am and the Harvest for Hope walk at the Oro Valley Marketplace. Supporting Veterans The Veterans Heritage Project is devoted to recording US veteran's stories and experiences in the military. These interviews are ultimately compiled into a book called Since You Asked and is sent to the Library of Congress. They meet every other Wednesday at 8:15 in Mr. Dickinson's room (A214). Two interviews have been conducted so far this year, one of a submarine veteran and the other of an Air Force Nurse. Both were inspiring and captivating, and we look forward to similar experiences throughout the year. If you are a veteran and would like to be interviewed, please email the adviser, Donald Dickinson. |
Fine Arts Booster Meeting - Mon 9/17 @ 5pm
Please join us for the Fine Arts Booster meeting at 5pm on Monday September 17 in the 2D class room. Please park in the Staff Parking lot and enter Fine Arts building from parking lot. We will be discussing goals for the year (large items for the 2D and 3D programs-new tables, new potters wheels, etc) and fundraising options. We appreciate your feedback. We'd like to thank everyone who sent in supplies from the teachers' class wish lists! All the wonderful donations will come in handy. The teachers still need paint brushes. If you get your clothes dry cleaned, please save the plastic and send it in to school. It is great for keeping ceramic projects moist while the students are working on them. ART CLUB meets every Thursday from 3:30 to 5pm in the 2D room. All students are welcome to join. The students are working murals for Club Green and items to sell at the upcoming art show Dec. 1 and 2. We could use donations of microwave popcorn for Art Club. |
