Adding to the introductions highlighted in previous newsletters, here are four more experienced professional who just joined the IRHS staff ...
A.J. Malis, Assistant Principal, Instructional Support
I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and went on to teach chemistry, AP Chemistry, and physics at Catalina Foothills and Salpointe Catholic. From 2000-2003, I took a brief period of time away from education to work as an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Arizona. After leaving the UofA, I taught at Palo Verde HS for 8 years. In 2010, I moved into administration when I took a position at Amphi Middle School and I'm fortunate to be able to continue administrative work here at Ironwood Ridge High School. I'm so excited to be a part of the Nighthawk family and look forward to getting to know the students and families in this community.
Bernice Maxwell, Ed.S, NCSP - School Psychologist
I am very excited to be here at IRHS as the new school psychologist and look forward to working with students and staff. I earned my Ed.S. in Bilingual School Psychology from the University of Arizona five years ago and became a Nationally Certified School Psychologist in 2010. Previously, I completed my undergraduate work in Special Education at Brigham Young University. I spent 14 years in the classroom and have taught students from preschool through high school in a variety of programs. As much as I enjoyed teaching, I absolutely love being a school psychologist and helping students achieve their highest potential. My husband and I have been married for 29 years and are the parents of four awesome children, all of whom are Amphi graduates. We are also the proud grandparents of three amazing grandsons.
Joseph DeWees, Biology Teacher
My name is Joseph DeWees and this is my first year here at Ironwood Ridge High School. I am teaching Biology and Environmental Science. I have taught Biology and Marine Science the last 7 years in Prescott, AZ. I have a degree in Plant Biology from ASU. I am new to the Tucson area, and having been enjoying it very much so far. I am here with my wife, Teri, who grew up here in Tucson, and my 2 daughters Amber and Abby. I love teaching the biological sciences. I am truly excited about this school year and look forward to becoming a part of the Ironwood Ridge community. Go Nighthawks!
Marsha Hughes, Special Education Teacher
After a 10 year hiatus from teaching I am looking forward to a fabulous year at IRHS. I have a BS in Special Education and Elementary Education. Previously I taught for 11 years in Utah before moving to AZ 7 years ago. My teaching experience was in the Resource room where I worked with students from K-12th grades. This year I will be team teaching with two incredible teachers, Nicole Blanchard (RR Pre-Algebra) and Jim Ewing (Biology). I will also be teaching two Study Skills classes. My husband and I are the proud parents of 5 children, 2 of which are IRHS graduates and our youngest daughter is currently attending IRHS.
