Greetings!

Welcome back!

By Donna Papacosta, PIC chair

September really does feel like the beginning of the calendar for many, even those of us whose children are finished with school. Perhaps you've enjoyed a slower pace this summer, taking advantage of the hot, dry weather. But now that it's time to gear up for a busy year, your PIC team has been working to build a strong program for you.

On September 12, the well-known marketing consultant Steve Slaunwhite will lead our season's kickoff meeting with a workshop on Practically Painless Prospecting. We'll learn how to keep the flow of prospects coming; this is an essential skill for indies.

Register here.

In October we'll have an informal meeting so we can get to know each other better and perhaps enjoy a beverage. In fact, our program for 2012-2013 will include more of these unstructured meetings (bonus: no charge to attend). Stay tuned for details.

Another heavy-hitter joins us for our November meeting: Ilese Benun of the Marketing Mentor Program. Watch for more details about this meeting soon.

Of course none of these things would happen without the dedication and energy of your PIC executive: Pat Davies, director of programming; Elizabeth Trew, director of communications; Sharon Aschaiek, director of membership and events; and Amy Sept, director of social media. Thank you as well to all of you who volunteer to help our group.

See you in September!

Clarity girl meets entrepreneurs looking for a brand boost

What makes you different from your competition? Are you in love with your business? Do you know how you are going to make more money and move your business to the next level?

These were just a few of the critical questions that Rhonda Page, a.k.a. "clarity girl", a moniker that she has earned as a result of years of experience in helping entrepreneurs and large businesses in building their brands and discovering what makes them different, asked the independents gathered together for PIC's Know Your Difference session on June 6.

Debunking misconceptions about branding

The discussion started with acknowledgement that there are three major misconceptions about branding:

  • brand is the logo
  • brand and sales are unrelated
  • only the "big guys" need to worry about brand
