BRIGHT SPOTS
    sun mosaic
BRIGHTSPOTS is a way that YMCA staff can be nominated and recognized by fellow staff  and members for great work, dedication and all around awesomeness.
Here our some recent nominees from our staff team that you think are really BRIGHT SPOTS in our organization!

cassie Cassie Perez (ChildWatch) :

Cassie is the best!  Working in Child Watch, she does a great job with the kids, but she also always has everyone else's back.  Lately there has been a lot of sickness going around, and Cassie has stepped up to cover shifts anytime she is able.  She's super reliable and a great role model!

James James Comfort (YMCA Parking):

James has been working in the parking lot all winter.  I've been miserable because it's so cold - but James always has a smile on his face for members and staff. James Comfort is a fairly new addition to the YMCA staff team but what a great addition he has been.  He works countless hours in the craziest weather, from the sub-zero blizzard conditions to the dog days of summer, ensuring our members and their vehicles are safe and sound.  Continually patrolling our lots and property James has an easy going personality and is quick to smile, wave or say his hello's to staff and members alike.

catherine Catherine Awaad (YMCA   Membership)

Catherine has worked in a few different departments since high school, but she just started at the Front Desk last month.  She has caught on to things really quickly, helps out however she can, and is always quick with a smile. If you're not sure who we're talking about, she's the new girl at the front always telling you to "have a nice workout" when you walk in during the day on Mondays, Wednesday & Fridays.

Tanya Tanya Davis (YMCA Wellness)

Tanya is the happy face you see daily in our Wellness Center on weekdays.  She works closely with our members orienting them to the Wellness Center and guiding them through Ready, Set, Go appointments. She also keeps a very clean area as we all appreciate the time she takes to rack plates, tidy up, change towels and make sure the place looks like home.  Tanya will be leaving us shortly to move on to Pennsylvania and we will truly miss her professionalism and excellence at the YMCA!

Chelsea! Chelsea Ambroziatis  (YMCA Camp Oaksasha Director, Southbury)  Chelsea is not only the Director of YMCA Camp Oakasha she is the teen liaison, Outdoor Center Program Director, Southbury Sports Program Director ~ you get the picture. Chelsea is a breath of fresh air when involved in any project or program. Her mind is creative, quick and thoughtful.  She is a constant reminder to those around her why we work for the Y and that we can do good works in our every day lives. Her spirit and energy are contagious. In the relatively short time with the Waterbury YMCA Chelsea had made quite an impact on this community and I expect we will see more good things down the road.

AWESOME JOB GUYS!!! Keep on making a difference everyday at the YMCA.

You can nominate a YMCA BrightSpot too!

A HUGE congratulations to our first group of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA graduates!

On February 28th our LIVESTRONG pilot group held a graduation ceremony complete with awards, movie review, family, YMCA friends and an enormous, delicious pot luck lunch.  We are so very proud of this group as they overcame some pretty big physical and mental challenges.  All of them grew stronger and will continue to use the YMCA to maintain health beyond the LIVESTRONG program.

If you would like to attend an upcoming LIVESTRONG graduation we would love to have you!  If you know a loved one that could benefit from this amazing program please contact us!

Space is limited and on a first-come, first served basis. For more information or to be added to the waiting list for the upcoming sessions of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA please contact:

HEALTH AND WEALTH

 .

You've heard that saying before, right?  "My wealth is my health" or "true wealth is health".  We've been thinking about the meaning of that a lot lately.
You see, back in the fall we started our first pilot test program for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.  When our staff was training for that we never could have imagined how close to home the program would hit us.  Some weeks later we learned that two members of our staff team had been diagnosed with cancer.
Fast forward to this spring as LIVESTRONG is entering it's first official session and our two staff members are undergoing surgery and treatment for their respective types of cancer. This experience of some of the healthiest people we know being taken for a ride by cancer is hard to comprehend.  Attending our LIVESTRONG graduation and seeing our 8 participants grow and get stronger over 12 weeks took on a whole new meaning.  Recently a dear YMCA Triathlon Club member that has been fighting cancer enrolled in the new session of LIVESTRONG.  I can't explain to you how it feels to know that one of our YMCA programs is truly going to help our friends here.  You see, the LIVESTRONG program helps ALL OF OUR FRIENDS. All of us are touched by cancer in some way, and sooner rather than later it turns up in someone you love and you find yourself asking "how is this happening?"

Before I saw our LIVESTRONG program in action, I didn't understand how much value it would have at the very first session.  Our Health and Wellness program specialist, Meghan Curley spends at least an hour with each participant interviewing them and gaining an understanding of what life is like for EACH ONE OF THEM.  She has the most amazing way of building a trusting, caring relationship with each person.  Seeing LIVESTRONG in action makes me even more proud to be part of this organization.  Did you know that it's FREE for anyone in our community that wants to participate?  Did you know that our staff has been specially trained as cancer exercise specialists to help each person get strength back and feel better everyday?  It's a truly comprehensive program that addresses meditation, strength, family time and LIVING.

That being said, we are on the horizon of our Annual Community Support Campaign. I ask you to think about what happens here at the YMCA, because I guarantee that while you are on a bike or in a class changing your own life, someone else's life is changing here too in the most remarkable way.
If you've never made a gift to the Y before or haven't been exactly sure about what we do...WE CHANGE LIVES.  If you want to be a part of changing lives through Healthy Living, Youth Development and Social Responsibility please make a gift, large or small to your Greater Waterbury YMCA.
