#Truemeaningofxmas
So here we are again...in the last couple of weeks before Christmas. A recent instagrammer, a tag I keep seeing is #truemeanignofxmas, which sparked this little story, which I think you will enjoy.
On a recent trip to the midwest earlier in the year, we were packing up the car getting ready to head back to Connecticut. Just then, my mother ran out to the driveway with a brown bag of things. I sighed. She's always trying to give me (translation: unload) little mementos from the attic or basement prefaced with "You can enjoy them now!" She said it was some Christmas decorations and that I should pack them away gently. "Ugh..MOM!' I pouted and grabbed the bag and shoved it in the back of the car. We drove away silently to my parents waves growing more distant in the rearview mirror. It would be another year before I returned, a thought that always made me a little emotional.
Fast forward to the first week of December. Myself and my two children are busily unpacking the boxes of ornaments and out comes the brown bag from the attic. It's full of lights and some other random ornaments, nothing too special. Just as I was about to crumple the empty bag I noticed something small and red in the bottom....
As I pulled it out, it was a small bell with a few colored popcorn kernels glued to it. A tiny crooked pigtailed girl that looked like my daughter was also glued to the front of it. I recognized it as an ornament I made in kindergarten over 30 years ago. I stared at my picture and saw my daughter's face in it, some of the popcorn had been stolen by mice in the attic, but it was still in one piece.
Eva, my daughter, asked me what it was and who was in the picture. "It's me", I said, "when I was just about your age." "Grammy saved it for us all of this time, and now you can put it next to yours on the tree." I thought of my mom for a while that night, and all of the old Jacobson's boxes she had stuffed under the bed with all of my trinkets and drawings in them. The true meaning of Christmas has always been elusive to me, but at that moment, I felt a little bit closer to it. I knew that someday I'd annoy Eva with some little packages stowed away for years and she'd find a fond memory that would lighten her heart. I can't help but think that my mom did it on purpose, so that I'd center myself on a time when we agreed a little more. I missed her.
Cherish the time with your parents, friends, children and loved ones. Merry Christmas, enjoy the true meaning of the holidays and stop by to see us at the Y, it's where your friends and family are!
