WE'RE NOT DONE WITH WINTER YET!
Groundhog Phil didn't see his shadow a couple of weeks ago, so there's no early spring on its way.
In the meanwhile, an intriguing video filmed last year is available on the internet: Heather Hansen in Emptied Gestures, where she is, in her own words, "exploring ways to download [her] movement directly onto paper, emptying gestures from one form to another." It is a creative, visual depiction of movement upon the floor. We use the floor creatively, as well as practically, in Awareness Through Movement classes: as a mirror reflecting our movements; as beach sand or even new snow, giving us a clear impression of our weight, our shape, our tension, and our balance when we lie or stand upon the floor.
In Mindful Spontaneity*, Ruthy Alon, one of Moshe Feldenkrais' first thirteen practitioners trained in 1969, wrote: "A full life calls upon you to create equilibrium in thousands of configurations and temporary postures, as well as to give up stability in order to produce movement in space and arrive at another new stable posture...."
This cold and snowy winter is quite a challenge to us all, but it also provides an opportunity to revive childhood "drawings of angels" and other impressions in the snow. What better time to join one of our ATM classes where you can explore the endless possibilities of movement to know yourself more deeply and improve your everyday life!
