FELDENKRAIS & NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS!

The start of a new year approaches - a time to reflect on how we've lead our lives. This is a time to appreciate what excites and thrills us; eliminate or modify what dulls or defeats us; improve and learn skills that lead us to happy outcomes. Hence, the custom of New Year's Resolutions abounds. In the past, as we know all too well, our initial determination is gradually diminished by well-learned patterns of resistance to the very changes we vowed to make! Old habits win out over our best intentions - again.

Do not dismay! There is one habit that we can gain - one skill that has the potential to override this resistance and make change possible. It is the very underpinning of the Feldenkrais Method: the habit of awareness. This skill of "attending" and noticing differences is one that is cultivated by Feldenkrais, because it is one that is innate to us humans simply because we are natural learners. With increased awareness and attention comes more curiosity. With curiosity, exploration. With exploration, creativity. And with all of these, we venture into the "restless process" of imagination.

That is how Ken Robinson refers to our unique human ability to imagine. His TED Talk [video], "How To Escape Education's Death Valley," [printable transcript] is a discussion of how we learn. He understands the conditions in which we thrive and the ways to create a "climate of possibility." The Feldenkrais Method is rooted in this same understanding that Robinson states as, "If conditions are right, life is inevitable."

We at the FLC will endeavor to create conditions for the inevitable triumph of each of our intentions and the flowering of happiness in all our lives in 2014!

Here's what our faculty are up to in addition to the classes they are offering
at the Center.

Marcy Lindheimer
Marcy heads out to California in both January and February to teach at the ABM Center in San Rafael. First, with Anat, she'll co-teach the third segment of the Children's Mastery. Parents from all over the United States will be bringing their children with special needs to the free Practicum at the end of the segment in which the students will work with those children. In February, Marcy will continue working with the teachers at the Basic Training and will supervise the new trainers as they co-teach the Training with Anat.

Scott Fraser
Scott is pleased to be teaching two new classes: Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (9am - Tuesdays) and Pilates/Feldenkrais Fusion (10am - Tuesdays) at the Chelsea Recreation Center, 430 West 25th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. These classes are sponsored by Equinox for "Shape-Up New York" and are free of charge.

Rachel Lidov and Suzanne Toren
Rachel and Suzanne were delighted to participate again in Olena Nitefor's advanced training "Dynamic and Challenging ATM" workshop in New York City as December began.
