LEARNING THE ESSENTIALS
OF A DYNAMIC, VITAL POSTURE
One of the most frequently asked questions Feldenkrais teachers at the Center are asked concerns posture -- not about our posturing politicians this election season, but questions such as: "What is correct posture?" and "How can I improve my posture?" or "Why is it so hard to keep good posture?" These are all great questions!
One answer is that by improving our skeletal support and organization -- by attending a regular Feldenkrais class of course! -- we can learn to allow our muscles to move us instead of hold us rigidly. This will encourage a more fluid, dynamic posture so that we can move with less effort, discomfort and unnecessary tension. Moshe Feldenkrais even rejected the term "posture" and replaced it with "acture" -- the idea of cultivating a relaxed readiness for effective action, and the ability to move in any direction from where we are without any additional preparation for action.
So perhaps we can shift our concept of what posture is, and explore with our experienced teachers at the Feldenkrais Learning Center new ways of how we can move ourselves in daily life, and (yes!) improve our dynamic posture.
Our featured article "Posture or Posturing: Myths and Reality" is a Huffington Post piece written by our Feldenkrais colleague, Stacy Barrows, who expertly summarizes the Feldenkrais outlook on posture. We hope you enjoy the article and look forward to seeing you in class, on the floor, soon!

Special Sunday Workshop
Intelligence in Action: The Mindful Practice of Embodied Living
with Barbara Forbes November 4, 1-5pm at the Feldenkrais Learning Center 2121 Broadway at 74th Street, Room 404
$75 (register by October 30, pay $60) To register, contact Barbara at 212-663-2875 or barforb@hotmail.com Mind and body are inseparable. Our language reflects this when we use expressions like: "I want to stand on my own two feet" or "I know in my heart. . . ."
Yet our awareness of the inter-relatedness of all aspects of ourselves is often minimal. How can letting go of superfluous effort improve our equilibrium -- mental as well as physical? How does awareness of ourselves while moving enhance our confidence -- postural and psychological?
How can we live smarter instead of harder? We will explore how to gain greater freedom in doing what we want to do by moving body and mind with awareness. (Comfortable, layered clothing is recommended so that you are warm and can move freely.)
