- A 20-year study of over 1,700 older men conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that worry about social conditions, health and personal finances all significantly increased the risk of coronary heart disease. Kubzansky et al. Circulation. 1997; 95(4)
- Men who complain of high anxiety are up to six times more likely than calmer men to suffer sudden cardiac death. Kawachi et al. Circulation. 1994; 89(5)
What hurts our heart?
- Fried foods - contain toxic fats, our heart muscle uses fats for energy first. French fries, potato chips, donuts.
- Sugary foods - create inflammation in the body which damages blood vessels
- Meats - especially when cooked at high temperatures
- Stress/Anxiety/Worry - constricts blood vessels that feed the heart muscle, creates inflammation, increases oxidation, increases heart rate due to lack of oxygen
What does our heart need?
Nutrients
Heart muscle cells contain the most number of mitochondria (energy producers) of any other cell in the body. The nutrients that feed the mitochondria, feed the heart.
- Magnesium - chelated forms such as magnesium citrate/aspartate are better absorbed
- CoQ10 - in the form of ubiquinol, we make it from cholesterol, statin drugs block this nutrient
- Taurine - an amino acid - found in protein rich foods
- Fish oil - found to keep cells in our blood vessels more pliable
- Garlic - the most studied plant, found to keep blood from clotting, which reduces risk of stroke
- Hawthorn - herb which increases blood flow to the heart muscle
Peace (flip-side of anxiety)
If you suffer with anxiety, and relaxation techniques are not helping, you may need to have your neurotransmitters (brain chemistry) tested. This will determine the exact imbalance. Sometimes it is high epinephrine or adrenaline, and other times it is low serotonin or gaba.
Express yourself
Share your feelings rather than bottling them up
Create something - garden, painting or artwork, remodeling or
recreating a room or space in your home
Dance! - movement that is free, fun and makes you feel your aliveness and shake off your worries
Have a good scream in your car (windows up!)
Love
Pets can be the best source of love and have been shown to reduce anxiety, relieve tension and improve mood
Hug someone
Put your right hand on your left shoulder, and your right hand under your left arm and squeeze tightly while you smile.
Relaxation
Meditation
Walking
Yoga
Relaxation pose - simply lay on your back and put your feet in a chair for 20 minutes per day. This pose has been shown to rejuvenate your parasympathetic nervous system which controls how relaxed we feel.
