SAFE STREETS, SAFE COMMUNITIES
If you noticed more children walking and biking last week, it might have been due to Walk to School Week, which was observed by schools in Rye, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Harrison and Port Chester. Walk to School Week activities were organized by teachers and parent volunteers and supported by the Rye Y through its Safe Routes to School initiative.
Safe Routes to School is a key component of the Y's broader efforts to make our streets safer for all users. Our work, which started in 2005, has included educational workshops on Safe Routes to School and Complete Streets, support for infrastructure projects like the Boston Post Road Diet and the Forest Avenue sharrows and public awareness campaigns, including the annual Rye High School poster contest about distracted driving.
We've made progress, but much needs to be done. We invite you to join us for a Community Roundtable entitled "Safe Streets, Safe Communities" on October 7. Click here for more details.
