Keeping Campers Healthy, Happy and Safe
|

Before the first gymnastics tumble, before the first swim or bus trip, Julianne Laverty has led camp counselors through hours of classroom and on-site training. As the Coordinator for Aquatics, Health and Safety, Julianne is responsible for a range of training programs for Y staff and the public. This time of year, she's busy making sure that the Y's camp counselors know what to do in every situation. Staff member Denise Woodin recently sat down with Julianne to learn more about preparation for the camp season.
DCW: Tell me about the counselor training.
JL: All of the Camp Directors and lead counselors go through a two-day, 20-hour Responding to Emergencies (RTE) training. They learn basic first aid, how to recognize emergencies, how to respond to seizures, stroke, diabetic shock.
They learn how to look for certain signs. We also go over camp-related emergencies like bee stings, animal bites, ticks, nosebleeds, cuts, abrasions, fractures, sprains and head and neck injuries. These are just a few of the potential emergencies we cover; there's really too many to list. Many of these things will never happen, but it's important to be prepared. The most important decision they can make is whether to call 9-1-1. When in doubt, it's always better to be on the safe side and call.
The counselors also take a half-hour class that's an add-on to RTE, which covers the use of an Epi-pen. And they take the CPR for the Professional Rescuer training, which is three to four hours long. Read more
