Richard KinsleyDear colleagues,

Ohio's most vulnerable citizens are facing daunting issues. 16.9% face food insecurity -- above the national average. More than a thousand Ohio children become victims of human trafficking each year. And Ohio ranks 39th of 50 states with adults with mental illness, or about 1 in 5, or 1.7 million people.

As institutions of higher education charged with educating our leaders of tomorrow, we must take responsibility and work collectively to use our power and influence to impact these issues.

A few weeks ago during Senator Sherrod Brown's Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Conference 300 students, recommended by their colleges, from 68 Ohio campuses, came together to learn more about food insecurity, human trafficking, and community mental health and how they impact Ohio. Students learned about these issues and how and why they affect the health and future vitality of our state. It is imperative for us to gather as a collective force to face these issues and learn how we can effect change in partnership with those working on these issues.

Please watch for regional gatherings planned for next semester, where we will come together and discuss partnerships and how we can impact these issues in our campus communities and across the state. Knowledge is power.

"To us, nothing is more powerful than a movement of passionate and principled people, working towards a good that is greater than themselves." -- Ford Foundation President Darren Walker in "How Can We Help?"

--Dick Kinsley, Executive Director

p.s. It is also important for us to learn how our collective work is affecting and changing our communities. Please take the time to ensure your campus completes the 2014-2015 Campus Compact annual member survey. Participation is more important than ever this year, as we examine not only connection with trends of the past but indicators of future direction. **Historically, it has been the responsibility of our member campus' civic engagement administrators (also known as Community Service Directors) to submit the survey.**

The Connect2Complete (C2C) program is no exception to these departmental changes and is glad to be a part of Columbus State's strategic plan to ensure student success, provide workforce development and promote civic engagement. Read more.
