VISTA SPOTLIGHT
Ava Carvour, OCC Connect2Complete VISTA Leader
Ava Carvour with author and activist Paul Loeb at Miami University Middletown
If Forrest Gump had taken on AmeriCorps National Service he might have found himself saying, "VISTA life is like a box of chocolates--you never know what you're going to get." As VISTA Leader with Ohio Campus Compact, it's like I lifted up the lid and found the sweetest chocolate in the box.

The VISTA Leader role is envisioned by the Corporation for National and Community Service as an extra layer of capacity building that coordinates with project supervisors to boost recruitment, retention, and performance at a service site. In this position I work behind the scenes to coordinate OCC's Connect2Complete (C2C) college success initiatives, mentoring the VISTA cohort and developing stronger methods of evaluating project progress. The C2C program works, and as leader, my goal is to find the best ways of showing our programs' transformative powers. Read more.

Recognition for Civic Engagement: The Washington Center's New York Life Higher Education Civic Engagement Awards recognize institutions for achieving breadth and depth of civic engagement through sustained and mutually transformational partnerships that define and address issues of public concern at any level from the local to the global. JCU is one of five 2015 award recipients nationally, along with four other Compact member institutions. Read more.

Improving Academic Outcomes: The First in the World grants are designed to develop innovative strategies for improving academic outcomes and retention rates for at-risk college students. JCU earned a $1.3 million development grant for the "Linked Learning and Early Warning" project, directed by Terry L. Mills, Assistant Provost for Diversity and Inclusion. Mills says the project is "designed to bolster shared knowledge, shared learning, and shared responsibility" among at-risk freshmen. JCU was one of just 17 grant recipients nationwide. Read more.

We congratulate JCU on the institution's commitment to deepen engagement and help students persist to graduation!
