THE CAMPUS-COMMUNITY
CONNECTION
                                                                                                   September 2015

Richard KinsleyDear Colleagues,

Many college students in America face a little-known but challenging financial issue: paying for both school and food. Feeding America--a nonprofit network of food banks--estimates that nearly half of its college-enrolled clients each year have to choose between education and food. In response to this need, the number of campus food pantries is rising. The College and University Food Bank Alliance has seen the number of food banks and pantries at campuses nationwide rise from just 1 in 1993 to 184 in 2015.

Food insecurity will be a focus at October's Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit, hosted by Senator Sherrod Brown. The summit will bring together student leaders, nominated by their campus presidents, who are working on issues like food insecurity and food justice in Ohio. You'll find registration details below.

Kudos to our campuses who have Campus Kitchens--Walsh University and Kent State University--as well as those that are part of the Food Recovery Network: Bowling Green State University, Case Western Reserve University, Denison University, Oberlin College, and Ohio Wesleyan University. We would also like to recognize The Ohio State University, Wright State University, Owens Community College, Lorain County Community College, and our other member campuses for their work on food security issues for local college students and their communities.

-- Dick Kinsley, Executive Director
