THE CAMPUS-COMMUNITY
CONNECTION
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
New OCC Initiative to Help You Communicate the Value of Your Civic Engagement Work

Richard KinsleyDear Colleagues,

As part of our ongoing work to promote the public value of higher education, Ohio Campus Compact has developed a variety of resources and forums for helping member campuses get the word out about their engagement efforts.

We see firsthand every day how our members are making a difference in their communities. After all, it's our mission to help you accomplish this work. We also know the importance of public outreach. Communicating about the impact of your work lets you demonstrate value to your president and others on campus, as well as to community partners, legislators, the media, and the public.

In light of this, OCC has created a suite of resources to help you provide context for your engagement work, track and convey impact, and present information in a media-friendly way. Read on to see how you can get the most out of these resources to promote your work statewide and beyond.

Outreach Tools for Communicating Value

To give you a concrete starting point, we've also developed a hands-on guide to conveying the value of college access and success efforts.

You can find all of these resources to help you draft stories about your work, on the OCC website in a members-only section. (When you click on this link, you'll be prompted to enter a members-only password, which is occmember.) Resources include:

Statewide Forums for Showcasing Your Work

In addition to helping members develop information to help communicate the value of their work both on and off campus, OCC provides venues for sharing this information widely:

  • The Campus-Community Connection. OCC's e-newsletter lets us showcase your work to a broad statewide audience of education, community, business, and government leaders.

  • Ohio Campus Compact website. We've created a special section on our website for sharing stories and photos that convey the value our members bring to their communities.

  • Collective Impact Project. Our latest initiative is designed to get at the collective benefit our members offer across Ohio and beyond. To that end, we are collecting stories and data on college access and success initiatives statewide.

You can submit news, story ideas, links, and events to OCC for us to share with our network and beyond by filling out this brief form.

A Fast Track to Gaining Public Recognition

You can use these resources and forums to get the word out about your community impact. Follow these simple steps to show your demonstrated impact of your outreach efforts in your communities.
  1. Read the resources above and start thinking about how you can track and report impact.

  2. Prepare a story or impact statement that gets at the heart of your value. If you have a college access and success program, start there.

  3. Send us your story, along with a photo or two if possible. We'll distribute it statewide through our newsletter and website.
Once we collect enough information about college access and success initiatives, we'll create a piece for statewide and national distribution to publicize these efforts and provide a model for campuses across the country.

SEND US YOUR NEWS
If you have news, events, or campus models of interest to our members, we'd love to include them in our newsletter. We may also highlight them in other state and national venues.

Send an email to Brenna Limbrick.
