 Dear Colleagues,
As summer gets under way and planning begins for next semester, let's take a moment to reflect on the evolution of civic engagement and why it's as important today as it was 20 years ago. Today's students are rebuilding communities through "sustained collaboration" rather than spending the occasional day volunteering; business students are working with local nonprofits to develop and execute business plans, student nurses are working to address social and cultural issues that contribute to health problems, and the list goes on. Their involvement not only fills a need at community organizations that are understaffed and underfunded, but also helps cultivate the professional skills and ethical qualities desired by business leaders. Ohio Campus Compact looks forward to continuing our strategic partnerships with our member campuses to strengthen students' civic identity and provide the skills they need to succeed in a more demanding workforce.
--Dick Kinsley, Executive Director
P.S. We hope to see your students this fall at the Propel Ohio Summit, sponsored by Senator Sherrod Brown in partnership with The Ohio State University, Ohio Campus Compact, the John Glenn Leadership Council, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

VISTA SPOTLIGHT
Connect2Complete 2015-2016 Host Sites Announced
The 2015-16 Ohio Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Connect2Complete (C2C) host sites have been selected, and the VISTA team is preparing for a pre-service orientation in July. The following campuses will host at least one VISTA to develop and/or build the capacity of their institution's C2C program:
- Capital University
- Columbus State Community College
- Kent State Stark
- Lorain County Community College
- Miami University Hamilton
- Otterbein University
- Wright State University
- Wright State University - Lake Campus
C2C combines service-learning and peer advocacy for low-socioeconomic status (SES) college students in first year or developmental education classes. This C2C strategy encourages the college students' academic, personal, and psychosocial development, as well as the development of social integration, cultural identity, and civic consciousness--all key factors for student success and persistence. The C2C model showed strong promise in a recent evaluation of the 2012-2014 pilot project. Over the course of the pilot, C2C students (low-SES students enrolled in one or more developmental education classes) were retained at higher rates than students in an equivalent comparison group. In addition, C2C students reported an increase in academic confidence, specifically in the areas of passing courses, continuing enrollment, achieving academic and career goals, and pursuing a career that will help their community. Similarly, the C2C students' educational aspirations increased over the pilot period, regardless of location, status, gender, or race. Those serving as C2C Peer Advocates also reported dramatically increased confidence and changes in their self-perception, expectations, and goals due to C2C training and experience. Read the evaluation report. We look forward to working with each campus in 2015-16!

The Course Reflection Project: Faculty Reflections on Teaching Service-Learning
For effective service-learning, following established best practices is not enough; instructors also need to reflect on how service-learning fits within the specific context and application of each unique course and partnership.
For this book, groups of faculty from a variety of disciplines reflected deeply on their courses, paying specific attention to obstacles and challenges. Each chapter represents the process of reflection and revision and serves as a guide to develop effective practices in varied curricular contexts.

Campus Compact Statement on Higher Education's Response to Events in Baltimore and Around the U.S.
Campus Compact has issued a statement on recent events involving police actions and the resulting discussions of race relations and social justice to guide campuses in creating their own responses. The statement reads, in part: "Campus Compact is dedicated to the proposition that colleges and universities have a special role to play in creating and sustaining the conditions for a thriving democracy. For that reason, we are compelled to respond to events in Baltimore, related protests across the country, and their antecedent conditions by providing our view of how colleges and universities can take positive action.... Campus Compact calls upon our 1,100 member colleges and universities and all of higher education to act, and we commit ourselves to supporting institutions as they do."
