Richard KinsleyDear Colleagues,

As a new political season gets under way in preparation for local, state, and national elections, including the 2016 presidential election, political involvement by students in all forms--voting, participation in campaigns, dialogues on issues and policies, etc.--is critical for students to become fully engaged and active citizens.

This month's highlighted article, "Reflections Upon Community Engagement: Service-Learning and Its Effect on Political Participation After College" by Fletcher Winston, explores how participation in service-learning affects students' political engagement, both while they're in school and later in life.

Ohio Campus Compact's support of service-learning and other experiential pedagogies underscores our commitment to educational practices that help students develop as "engaged citizens." OCC'S participation in the Campus Election Engagement Project reflects our belief in the importance of getting students to register and vote--both because of the immediate difference their participation can make and because, as the article notes, engaging students now can confer positive results in the long term.

Planning Engagement for the 2016 Elections and Beyond
With Ohio primary elections less than a year away, this summer is the perfect time to get your campus ready to engage students in the 2016 elections--and to keep planning for this fall's local elections. Whether you're just starting the process or have a program already in the works, Ohio Campus Compact and the Campus Election Engagement Project are here to help. In 2015-2016, we will continue working with schools on projects that can make a huge difference in student participation but that we know can be difficult to implement in the heat of an election year.

Our goal in 2015 is to help continue the momentum you built in 2014 to set the stage for maximum student engagement in 2016. Our team is helping schools secure on-campus polling places, coordinate voter registration with fall course registration and freshman orientation, develop greater faculty involvement, work with faculty to create local nonpartisan candidate guides, encourage student governments to contribute to election activities, and foster community outreach. We're also helping schools sign on with CIRCLE's National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement, which allows you to track student voting rates. As the 2016 elections draw closer, we'll offer even more personalized training and resources to help you keep building for the future.

Email us at studentvote@ohiocampuscompact.org. We'll work with you to gather the information needed to establish a baseline for election engagement on your campus, and to begin outlining the long- and short-term practices that can be put in place in time for the upcoming elections. It's important to plan and implement programming in 2015, while preparing for the much larger election in 2016. We'll work together to combine our resources and engage as many students as possible in the democratic process!

VISTA Spotlight: Deana Shook, Lorain County Community College

When Deana Shook started her year of service at Lorain County Community College (LCCC) as one of Ohio Campus Compact's Connect2Complete (C2C) VISTAs in June 2014, she had no idea where this path would lead her. She knew it was a worthy cause, though, and she has always embraced a challenge.

Deana and her co-VISTA, Alissa, form a dynamic duo running the C2C program and fighting poverty by building bridges of support for students at the college. The two have worked hard to create an inviting environment for their seven Peer Advocates (PAs), who work to help low-income developmental education students succeed at the college. Recently they added office hours to the PA job description, and have been encouraging the PAs to work together on service projects and classroom presentation ideas.

One of the more recent accomplishments for the program is the addition of LCCC as an official Ohio Benefit Bank site, allowing PAs to become certified to assist the campus community with applying for public benefits. The VISTAs are also in the process of working with a campus strategy team to establish an on-campus food pantry.

The VISTAs joke that they have an "open door policy," mostly because their cubicles don't have doors, but also because they thoroughly enjoy the presence of students in the office. Deana especially loves it when the PAs stop by because it builds camaraderie. Deana doesn't know what her next big adventure entails, but she is thankful for the experience she has gained, the friendships she has created, and the opportunity to make a difference in the world, one day at a time.
