Dear Colleagues, As we welcome 2015 and the opportunities it brings, it is important to focus on the hope and positive change that our civic engagement work across the state achieves and inspires. As anchor institutions, Ohio colleges and universities, working in partnership with local communities, have the opportunity every day to make real impact on the health and wellbeing of those communities. Our work uplifts all of us and gives us confidence in the future. Together, let's make this a great year in civic engagement. --Dick Kinsley, Executive Director

OCC VISTA Spotlight: Expanding Campus Impact
|
 |
 | |
Rachael Lange, OCC Connect2Complete (C2C) VISTA at Miami University Hamilton
|
Rachael Lange has served as an Ohio Campus Compact Connect2Complete (C2C) VISTA at Miami University Hamilton for the past year and a half, training and coordinating the university's C2C Peer Advocates. Rachel and the Peer Advocates work to help vulnerable students succeed through a combination of peer support and community connections built through service-learning.
Since Fall 2013, Miami Hamilton's C2C program has trained 14 Peer Advocates, worked with more than 20 developmental education classes, and participated in over 300 hours of service.
The program has had a profound impact on the Peer Advocates who work to support struggling students, as well as on the students they serve. One Peer Advocate is now pursuing a career in higher education through Miami University's Student Affairs in Higher Education program. Another accepted an AmeriCorps VISTA position at a local nonprofit community partner.
For Fall 2014, Miami expanded C2C from 6 classes and 6 Peer Advocates to 9 classes and 9 Peer Advocates. In Spring 2015 C2C will expand even further by partnering with Campus Kids and other child care centers on Oxford and Middletown's campuses. Read more.
