Dear Colleagues,

With Veteran's Day just past, let us take a moment to remember the Ohio veterans who have served our country to ensure that we have access to the liberties we enjoy daily. Just last month it became easier for our state's veterans to receive college credit for their military training. On September 16, House Bill 488 took effect "to create a uniform, effective process for awarding college credit to veterans for military training."

Ohio Campus Compact supports veterans and other nontraditional students in their college aspirations through the Connect2Complete program (see below). Let's continue to honor our country's veterans and active duty personnel, and thank them for their service.

-- Dick Kinsley, Executive Director

P.S. Campus Compact's 2014 membership survey is now open; see the article below for information and a link to survey instructions. Don't miss this opportunity to have your great work counted in our national assessment!

MEMBER OPPORTUNITY: VISTA logo
Become an OCC VISTA Host Site

In the coming year, Ohio Campus Compact will have several new host site openings for AmeriCorps VISTAs working on the
Connect2Complete (C2C) college retention program. C2C works to improve retention and graduation rates among low-income and underrepresented college students through a unique combination of peer advocacy and community engagement activities.

Currently 7 AmeriCorps VISTA members serve at 6 member campuses across Ohio. OCC expects to have 12 slots available for VISTAs to be hired this spring for the 2015-16 academic year. This is a great opportunity for member campuses to build capacity for college access and success efforts.

Erin Corwin, Experiential Education Professional at current OCC VISTA site Lorain County Community College (LCCC), notes, "Through the support of the OCC's AmeriCorps VISTA program, we have a much-needed structure to assist us in growing and sustaining our C2C program." LCCC's C2C program has served some 950 students since 2012.

If your campus is interested in becoming a C2C VISTA host site, contact Lesha Farias at 740-587-8568 or lfarias@ohiocampuscompact.org.

Campus Compact Annual Member Survey Now Open

Campus Compact invites all member campuses to complete the 2014 annual membership survey. Conducted for nearly 30 years, this survey is the most comprehensive and widely distributed review of campus-based service, service-learning, and civic engagement in the nation.

Results allow campuses to compare their progress with state and national trends and help all of us better articulate our case to elected officials, funders, and the media. For example, the survey has allowed us to calculate the dollar value of campus-supported student work in the community, which our last survey showed to be $9.7 billion nationally. The value of such work among OCC member campuses alone is some $327 million a year.

The survey provides a mechanism for campus-based information gathering that supports applications for the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement and the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. It also enables evaluation of campus engagement efforts. The deadline for completing the survey is December 12. Instructions and a link to the survey can be found here
