As we head into the colder months, the night sky is clearer for the best viewing. I didn't want you to miss the gorgeous crescent Moon by sparkling Venus this week (most prominent Wed., Nov. 6). Right after sunset in the western sky, Venus will be the first "star" to appear, and it will be very close to the crescent Moon. During the 8 or so months that Venus is in the Evening Star phase, there are one or two nights each month when the crescent Moon is nearby. Let's hope for clear skies to see this once again. Next month, around Dec. 5, will be the last time for many months.
Modern day folks on earth get so busy with earthly matters, they often forget to look up to the heavens and see the show that's always going on there. Ancient people were much more aware of the seasonal and celestial phenomena. Before electricity, they weren't distracted at night by TV or indoor activities, and without all the ambient light of today's civilization, they could really see the night sky in all its glory!
At the winter solstice, Venus will begin its 40-day Retrograde backtrack, and about 48-50 days later, appear as the Morning Star for about 8 months. If you're an early riser (that's not me!), you can see the waning crescent Moon with it once a month a couple days before each New Moon. In my November LOOKING UP cable TV show, I discuss the Venus cycle, this upcoming retrograde and what it means for us. Have a look. It's a 28-minute show, and should be in this archive in about a week.
The "shadow" period begins Nov. 20 as Venus proceeds through the degrees where it will back up from Dec. 21 to Jan. 31, 2014. Then it goes forward through that range of degrees again in the exiting shadow until March 4. So altogether we're looking at about 3 months of paying extra attention to finances and relationships, the two main areas associated with Venus. The back-up is in Capricorn (between 13-1/2 and 29 degrees), indicating a time to straighten out matters, get organized, consolidate, set rules and boundaries, and make plans and commitments.
Although Pluto is in Capricorn, Venus does not pass it three times. Venus will be beyond Pluto when it backtracks. However, three times it will make a nice sextile to Saturn, the ruling planet of Capricorn: 11/23, 1/14 and 2/24. Around these dates, we have the strongest push for all the tasks and lessons Venus in Capricorn wants us to give us.

Yeah, Mercury's Retrograde

Well, this photo may look a little like a moon but it's Mercury showing us a profile view. I wonder if Mercury chuckles knowing what havoc it's wreaking when it goes backwards! Lots of reports (and complaints) now about all that's screwed up. And here it is another Election Day with Mercury Retrograde. We'll see if we have some crazy problems, especially in states that have been monkeying around with voter IDs and striking people off the voter lists.
This retrograde is totally in Scorpio, the sign of finances and insurance. Its shadow began on Oct. 1, the rollout date for the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") website, and we know what a headache that's been! Don't you wish our nation used astrologers like ancient civilizations did?? Maybe we could avoid some problems. Just saying.
So maybe you're reviewing your insurance policy and researching what else might be available. Review and research are two of the big RE's of Mercury Retrograde. I'll be looking at mine one of these days. The retrograde began Oct. 21 and ends Nov. 10, but we're not out of the shadow until Nov. 27. Hopefully computer glitches will be addressed by then!
Yesterday, I was a guest on an online radio show, Joyce Barrie and Friends, talking about Mercury Retrograde. My fellow guest, numerologist Lois T. Martin, chimed in. She watches Mercury Retrogrades and knows a lot of astrology, too. You can listen to the podcast (about an hour long show, just so you know). We had to laugh midway through the show when I had phone trouble and my voice wasn't coming through to the audience, so typical Mercury Retrograde!

I hope you haven't had too many problems with this crazy Trickster planet zigzagging around. We can't just stop in our own tracks because Mercury is retrograde, but we can remember that it wants us to slow down and take a good look around.
