2016 Equipping Congregations Day
We are grateful for the great day we shared on Saturday. Thanks to the planners, teachers, people serving food, supporting our gathering and cleaning up after we were finished. We thank Bethel and Vinje Lutheran of Willmar for hosting our gathering.

New this year we have posted PowerPoints or other Handouts from our workshop leaders on the Equipping Congregations webpageRev. Dr. Dwight Zscheile's book "The Agile Church: Spirit Led Innovation in an Uncertain Age" is still available at our synod office for only $15.00 per copy

This event which drew over 700 people from 142 congregations, continues our emphasis on EQUIPPING. Plans have already begun for the 2017 Equipping Congregations Day. If you or your congregation would like to have an active part in this exciting event for next year you can contact, Pastor Linda Pedersen at linda.pedersen@swmnelca.org.

ELCA to join International Women's Day celebration
+Andrew Steele, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
On Tuesday, March 8, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will be joining millions around the world to celebrate International Women's Day and the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. We celebrate this day knowing that the work toward gender equality still remains. Through ELCA Global Church Sponsorship's International Women Leaders initiative, we are boldly investing in the education and future of women. In addition to a $100,000 matching challenge on International Women's Day to support the International Women Leaders initiative, we have also created worship resources to use during services. Click here and find them under the "General" tab.
Stewardship Work
+ Bishop Jon Anderson
Dr. Kennon Callahan invites us to remember that people are motivated in the church in different ways.  Whether we are inviting people to give of themselves to serve in a project, participate in a small group study, share their financial resources or love their neighbors, it is helpful to remember different people are motivated different ways.  Of course you could name other reasons people are motivated, but Kennon named five.  He also named that insiders in a congregation are often motivated by sources that are different from people who are not busy and active in the life of a congregation.
Here are his five sources of "motivational fuels."

Which of these appeals will energize your people in the next decade?

  1. Compassion: sharing, caring, giving, loving, serving
  2. Community: roots, place, belonging, family, friends
  3. Challenge: attain, accomplish, achieve
  4. Reasonability: data, logic, analysis, good sense
  5. Commitment: loyalty, duty, obligation, vow
His hunch from a decade ago when he was writing and what I am seeing today is that congregations that focus on community and compassion thrive. Inside church people are more likely to focus on the first three sources.  To move forward the life of your congregation and deepen the stewardship of the whole you need to use all five fuels.

Dr. Kennon Callahan is an author of
15 books, Dr. Callahan is best known for his ground-breaking  Twelve Keys to an Effective Church, helping congregations advance their focus on mission growth.

Chris Hagen ScholarshipsDiscerning God's Mission: Trust-Building and Collaborative Leadership for Collective Insight
+Bishop Jon V. Anderson
Thanks to one of our donors, we have several $300 scholarships for people to participate in the class Pr./Dr. Chris Hagen will be teaching this summer. Please email Carla Klawitter at carla.klawitter@swmnelca.org  if you are interested in taking this course.
This course prepares church leaders and interim pastors for navigating congregations through collective discovery of God's intent for their church. Trust is fundamental for teamwork. Collaborative leadership leverages collective wisdom and skills. Relevant ministry aligned with God's will is the result.
This course is designed in three distinct segments:
  • June 15-Sept. 23: Distance learning online
  • Sept. 26-30: Group week training at Luther Seminary
  • Oct. 3-Dec. 31: Learning project with one-on-one coaching
Many will benefit from this course. Congregations in transition will connect with God's present work in the world, a more faithful approach than inventing their own purpose and direction. Churches in a rut will discover anew, God's purpose for them and will identify key ministries for engaging God's mission. Church leaders seeking renewed enthusiasm for ministry will see fresh the Spirit's work in their lives, journey with colleagues in ministry, explore God's ways in the world and awaken to renewed passion for ministry. Interim pastors will strengthen their leadership. Trust-building and collaborative leadership for collective insight are essential tasks for guiding congregations into a new chapter in God's mission in the world.
