Sharing Our Gifts and Supporting One Another
+ Bishop Jon Anderson and Pr. Kimberly Swanson-Buffie
Across your synod, pastors and congregational leaders are stepping up to support sister congregations regularly in times of transition and crisis.  I asked Pastor Kimberly to share her story of recently stepping in to support a sister synod and also a congregation that she knew and loved because they hosted her on her internship.  I am thankful that we are seeing the fruit of this offering of time by our youngest congregation, House of Grace, and their mission developer.

+ Pr. Kimberly
It had become obvious to me that there was some trouble brewing for Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church (SOJ) in Buffalo. Hints here and there in the community, Facebook posts, things people said or did not say, worry and concern when encountering people in the grocery store and Target.

So when Pastor Luke Schmidt, associate pastor at Zion Lutheran church in Buffalo (the other ELCA congregation in this town), approached me and asked me if I had heard what was going on and how their congregation did not want to see any more people jump ship from SOJ out of fears of the church being closed, I was not surprised.  After all, I had paid attention to the news about the financial woes and of the pastor leaving to take another call because I care. What did surprise me was his next statement "Kimberly you are the one who can help them-you know them, they trust you." That series of statements began to tug at my heart and it got me thinking.

Your Mission Support Dollars at Work  - Assignment Consultation for Seminary Graduates - End of the Year Finances
+ Bishop Jon V. Anderson
A few weeks ago I shared at an ordination, that it takes many expressions of our church body to support the development of a pastor.
  • Your offerings support your local churches and some are shared in mission support to the synod and churchwide expressions of our church.
  • The local congregation's ministry supports parents, friends, Sunday School teachers and resources, Confirmation and Camp ministry, who God uses to support a future seminarian in their formation as well as people who God will call to many other vocations.
  • The synod will provide resources to fund campus ministries, youth gatherings, seminaries (buildings and professors), internship pastors and congregations.
  • Our churchwide expression also helps fund seminaries and the development of teachers. The list could go on.  God is working through many different people, congregations and institutions of the church to support the formation of a seminarian and to support the spiritual lives of others who will serve God in their many callings in life, too.
On Monday and Tuesday, leaders from across the church will gather to assign graduating seminary candidates for call in an assignment consultation.  You will be there because your bishop is one of the people who is in the room for this multi-layered discernment process.  I invite your prayers for our team of bishops, regional coordinators, seminary staff, and churchwide staff.  On Friday and Saturday, others from across the church will gather to sharpen and reform our candidacy manual and process.  You will be there as Pr. Kathryn Skoglund is trained for her new role.

As the end of the year came, we were thankful to end the year at 102.5% of budget. We are thankful for your personal and congregational support.  Because of falling mission support in 2014 we made a revision downward of our 2015 synod assembly passed budget of $220 thousand dollars based on the mission intents we had received and our history.  With our overall planned response, we will be able to restore funds we had promised to our shared ministry partners with synod council approval.  Our budget automatically shared more with our churchwide expression for national and global ministry based on a percent of our general Mission Support.  So the good news is tempered by the fall of overall mission support in the past three years.

If you have not submitted your mission intents for 2016 please do by clicking here. Again thanks for your generosity.  You make ministry happen all across our church and region with your gifts.

150 years ago, LSS of MN began when one small community of faithful believers saw a need and acted in love. As we launch into our next 150 years of service, LSS of MN is looking to spread the word in churches about the work we do throughout the state. We would love to provide you with materials to share about services we provide, or if you would rather an LSS of MN staff member present at your church, we would be happy to join you! Email Congregations@lssmn.org or call 651-969-2334 to request a speaker or with any questions you may have. Thank you for your partnership!

Health Assessment - Stewardship of Your Health
It's that time of year again! Portico Benefit Services and the Mayo Clinic want everyone in the Synod who gets their healthcare through the ELCA-Primary Benefit plan to assess their health, and there's a reward of $150 in wellness dollars if you do. Earn another $250 in wellness dollars if you take part in the GO! Challenge

Click here to start filling out your health assessment (HA). REMEMBER! you must login into your MyPortico to take the HA. As in previous years, it's crucial that you do this by April 30, because if enough ELCA-Primary Benefit members from SW MN Synod complete the survey, we will receive an across-the-board discount on health contributions. Click here to learn more about the 1% Health Contribution Discount.

Last year, we reached the goal with in two months, but wasn't the leading synod. In 2014 we were the first EVER to complete the 65%+ by the end of February! Let's get back on top this year!

After you completed the Health Assessment click here to let your synod know. We will have wellness opportunities coming in 2016.
