The Center for Worship & Music Studies Announces Fall Classes!

The Center for Worship and Music launches its Certificate in Worship and Music Leadership program in the fall of 2015.

With a great variety of courses, the Center will offer a certification program in five areas of study for those deeply engaged in congregational worship and music ministry; individuals can also take single classes of special interest. All classes will be taught face-to-face, but many will also have a distance-learning option for interested students.

Registration for the first set of courses will open July 1.
A detailed class list is already available by clicking here.

Quote by Walter Brueggemann:

We are people who must sing you,

for the sake of our very lives.

You are a God who must be sung by us,

for the sake of your majesty and honor.

And so we thank you,

for lyrics that push us past our reasons,

for melodies that break open our givens,

for cadences that locate us home,

beyond all our safe places,

for tones and tunes that open our lives beyond control

and our futures beyond despair.

We thank you for the long parade of mothers and fathers

who have sung you deep and true;

We thank you for the good company

of artists, poets, musicians, cantors, and instruments

that sing for us and with us, toward you.

We are witnesses to your mercy and splendor;

We will not keep silent . . . ever again.  Amen.

Lutheran World Relief - Thank You!

Pr. David Wangaard

"Lutheran World Relief wants to thank you for helping the world to smile. This past year, U.S. Lutherans just like you helped LWR reach over 571,000 people through the quilt and kit ministry, distributing $12.4 million dollars worth of quilts and kits! Your support is also providing lasting solutions to hunger in 22 countries, reaching 4.7 million people. May these smiles of gratitude help you to smile at the great things our God is doing in the world through you."

ELCA presiding bishop offers letter on Supreme Court marriage ruling
ELCA News Release

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), offered a pastoral letter June 30 to the 3.8 million members of the denomination in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling that same-sex couples may now exercise the right to marry. The full text of the statement follows:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you in the name of the crucified and risen Christ.

Last week the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision announcing the right of same-gender couples to have equal access to marriage. For many members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this decision is a welcome sign of hope and a time for celebration. Other members of this church do not agree with the court's decision and remain deeply concerned because of their understanding of Scripture.

This decision affects each of us, some profoundly, and we are not of one mind. Let us continue to accompany one another with prayer, love and mutual respect as we reflect on this new reality and remember Paul's words in 1 Corinthians about the enduring power of God's love.

The ELCA social statement "Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust" (2009) neither endorses nor forbids same-gender marriages and recognizes that we have differing understandings and convictions on this matter. In its decision, the court stated that "the First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths."

According to this church's social statement on human sexuality, all decisions about recognizing, supporting and holding publicly accountable same-gender relationships are entrusted to congregations. Click here to read more.

Mission Interpretation Videos

While these videos below were made for the synod assembly, they also were made to be used by congregations. These videos are great for social media material or offering a Mission Minute during congregation announcements.

You can find all the videos by click here

We are Church Together - Synod Videos:

The videos were made possible by a grant from your synod's endowment in response to requests from leaders and congregations in our synod.

We Only Need 45 More!

As of today, 201 congregations have turned in their Forms A & C. THANK YOU!  Click here to see the list of completed congregations. We still need 45 congregations to complete their 2014 Congregational Report. It is not too late!

The 2014 Congregational Reports were sent to each congregation from the ELCA office in December 2014. They were due by February 15, 2015 to be included in the reported statistical data but it is never too late to submit it. If your congregation is not one of the 201 congregations to already accomplish this please complete the forms online by clicking here or mail it in to the synod office NOW. You will need your congregational ID and password. They are both listed at the top of the form that was sent from the ELCA office. Your congregational ID stays the same but your password will change every year. If you need your password or help completing the forms please call Caitlin Kodet at the synod office (507) 637-3904 or email  caitlin.kodet@swmnelca.org.

These reports provide valuable information for our work together. Here are just a few ways that this data benefits this church and its members:

  • Congregation trend reports may be used by pastors in the call process and prospective members looking for more information about a congregation
  • Demographics are useful for congregations when planning mission-outreach opportunities
  • Financial data is used by ELCA Mission Investment Fund to help congregations seeking loans for building projects
  • Synods use data to determine new ministry starts and to plan mission strategy

Rural Ministry Scholarships

Recipients will have an openness and commitment to future service in rural settings. The profit from the LMM golf tournament goes into the LMM Rural Ministry Fund to help grow leaders. Besides the proceeds from the golf tournament, LMM also has an ELCA Fund for Leaders Endowment Fund which generates investment income for the scholarships. Since its inception, this endowment has awarded scholarships of $77,825 for seminary tuition.

Donations to the Rural Ministry Fund are appreciated even if you are not able to participate in the Golf Tournament.
