Synod News and Events - March 25, 2015

Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ

to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross.

In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will

and in the glorious victory of his resurrection,

who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.   Amen.

In these days as we approach Holy Week, you are in the thoughts and prayers of your synod staff.

Lent is a rich time in the lives of our congregations as people grow deeper in faith, hope, love and community in these 40 days. Lent also takes its toll on faith community's leaders.  May God breathe new life into you in these days.

May God bless you as we enter the great week where we remember the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.   May God invite you deeply into you personally the great Story of God's work to redeem and save us through Jesus Christ our Lord.

+Bishop Jon Anderson

By God's grace, together we have what we need . . .

+Rev. Joyce Piper, Synod Minister

In the midst of a six-month Lilly Endowment planning grant re financial challenges for pastors and congregations, I am learning again that one of our greatest assets becomes whatever we share together in Christ's name.  Accompaniment takes us farther together and in directions we could have not imagined alone.

This Lilly Endowment grant is shared first of all between New Jersey Synod and Southwestern Minnesota Synod.  It was someone's bright idea (Holy Spirit?) to suggest that we be partners in this project.  We are somewhat unlikely partners and therefore also excellent partners in our differences with one another.  Country mice and city mice!  We do share similarities of being places of spirited service in Christ's name, hard-working and innovative as well.  Differences are obvious in terms of population.  New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation, located right next to and between the metro areas of Philadelphia and New York City.  SW MN is densely populated with Lutherans, but rather sparsely populated in general.  Minnesota has six ELCA synods; New Jersey synod and state have the same boundaries.

"We have silos" . . . separate spheres of ministry.  This self-descriptive phrase was one of the first things I heard from our New Jersey colleagues when visiting the New Jersey synod office on March 12th.  I attended 8 hours of meetings with 3 different groups of leaders that day:  the Lilly Research & Planning Team, the Discipleship & Witness Team, and the Stewardship Team.  I responded that we have silos in SW MN also, but we try to keep grain in them and our relationships out of them.  Everyone laughed!

Warmth and welcome were extended to me, a visitor from the prairie.  I did not personally experience any "silos" or walls in my direction.  I felt a wonderful spirit of comradery and good humor among colleagues.  This joint project is bringing us together to brainstorm new solutions to stewardship challenges that continue to grow for our congregations and leadership.

We are indeed in this boat together.  It can seem like a tiny boat on a large sea change of economic challenge.  But as the disciples in the storm at sea, we are not alone in the boat.  Jesus is with us and we have one another!  We have partners in ministry across the nation and around the world.  Most importantly, we have partners in one another right in this place where our pioneer ancestors shared whatever tools they had and then made or invented new ones when the old ones didn't work anymore.

Thanks to everyone participating in the study and planning phase of this Lilly project.  Pastors and congregational financial chairs/treasurers are invited to fill out brief surveys.  The surveys are available at synod gatherings or from the synod office. (Please email Carla Klawitter at carla.klawitter@swmnelca.org for a copy of the survey.) Interviewing of 12 pastors and 12 financial chairs serving in a variety of settings will be done by some of our conference ministers.  Our Lilly Planning Team relating to staff overseeing this project includes Kirsten Rabbe (Trimont), Marv Isder (Fulda), Pr. Tim Wrenn (Windom) and Pr. Mark Yackel-Juleen (Shalom Hill Farm).

2015 Bishop Nominee Forums

Soon your congregation will be getting a letter in the mail about the Bishop Nominee Forums. Times and locations are posted here and on the left-hand events column.

The forums will open with a brief devotion by the host pastor followed by an introduction of all of the bishop nominees. Each nominee will receive five (5) minutes to make a prepared opening statement followed by questions submitted by the audience and responses from the nominees. After all written questions have been addressed, questions from the floor may be received as time allows.

During the time of questions and responses, the moderator will ask questions which have been received from the audience, and nominees will have two minutes to respond to each question.  Questions may be written and given to the nominating committee members as the forum continues.  Members of the nominating committee will serve as timers and assist the moderator as needed.

Thank you for your participation in this important time of discernment in the life of our synod.  We are grateful for your leadership in your own congregation as well as your support for the work of the synod.

Attention Rostered Leaders!

The Southwestern Minnesota Synod Endowment Committee has been developing a Pension Equity Fund in our Leadership Endowment.  With almost $5,000 now available for annual distribution we are pleased to announce you may be eligible to receive a 2015 Pension Equity Grant.

Reformation - Rosters

ELCA Conference of Bishops recommends unifying lay rosters, considers other business

ELCA News Release

The Conference of Bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) gathered here March 5-10 to continue their conversation and consideration on this church's proposals to form one unified roster of Word and Service. The conference also considered an array of topics ranging from theological education to mission support, from immigration reform to the means of grace, from the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 to Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA and more.

The conference is an advisory body of the ELCA that includes 65 synod bishops, the presiding bishop and secretary. It gathers at least twice a year for worship and study, sharing and to conduct business. The Rev. Jessica R. Crist, bishop of the ELCA Montana Synod, is conference chair.

The Conference of Bishops continued its conversation, offering perspectives about the formation of a single ELCA roster. The ELCA's study and dialogue about the work and ministry of its lay rosters began in 2007, which lead to the ELCA Church Council appointing a Word and Service Task Force to continue overseeing this process. A discernment team was also appointed to give particular attention to the "entrance rite" for the roster and to offer a recommendation about this rite for consideration by the 2016 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.

After a series of conversations, the Conference of Bishops recommended that the ELCA Church Council move forward on unifying the three lay rosters - associates in ministry, deaconesses and diaconal ministers - but delay consideration of the entrance rite "and related issues." Currently, associates in ministry are commissioned; deaconesses and diaconal ministers are consecrated. A decision will need to be made about the appropriate entrance rite for the unified roster. In its recommendation, the conference expressed its "deep gratitude" to the ELCA Word and Service Task Force and to the Entrance Rite Discernment Group.

"On one level, the move from three lay rosters to one roster of Word and Service appears simple. It actually is quite complex," said the Rev. William O. Gafkjen in an interview. Click here to read more.
Pastoral Staff Support Time
Retreat: "Facing Conflict together....I've got your back"
Thursday-Friday,
April 16-17
Green Lake Bible Camp, Chrysalis House
PSST... Represents a new network in our synod designed for pastors serving in settings with other pastors.

Presenter: Susan Nienaber
Just about every pastoral team will encounter folks who are challenging to leaders and other members. Unfortunately, not everyone experiences their behavior in the same way which then causes conflict within the team about how to respond. No matter who these difficult people are it is important to know when to embrace these folks, when to negotiate, when to stand your ground, when to withdraw and how to increase the congregational system's ability to maintain health and integrity. This training will use case scenarios to provide you with the tools, skills, appropriate mind-set and spiritual resources to deal with the most challenging folks in your congregation. Learn to evaluate the costs and benefits of different courses of action, how to manage your own reactivity and emotional "buttons" so that you can remain clear in your thinking, how you typically respond in stressful situations and how to make wise decisions.

Has Your Spouse Taken the Health Assessment Yet?

Portico Benefit Services

As you know, our synod reached the 65% goal last year. More than 65% of our eligible ELCA-Primary health plan members and spouses took the Mayo Clinic health assessment, and as a result:

  • Congregations in our synod received a 2% discount on 2014 health care contributions
  • Our synod received an additional 1% to support synodical wellness activities

We experienced these blessings in many ways as health care money was redirected to congregational and synodical ministries. What's  more:

  • Each ELCA-Primary member and spouse who took the health assessment earned $150 in wellness dollars, plus another $350 if they did follow-up activities
  • Leaders and families across the ELCA were more attentive to their health and well-being, leading to vitality in ministry and helping control long-term health costs
We're slightly behind last year's pace. We need spouses' help! New this year, spouses on the ELCA health plan must create their own myPortico account in order to complete the Mayo Clinic health assessment. Click here for three simple steps to setup an account.
