Synod News and Events - March 3, 2015
2015 Equipping Congregations Day

The 2015 Equipping Congregations Day in Willmar is now completed and it was an awesome day for about 900 people from across our Southwestern Minnesota Synod. The theme for the day, "Innovating with Integrity", took a lot of innovating and cooperation to be a great success. To have 28 different workshops presented in two separate churches, Vinje and Bethel, volunteer shuttle drivers moved the leaders between the two churches. There was also the moving of hundreds of chairs along with garbage cans from Calvary in Willmar to make the day work. Then there were the morning coffee and lunch servers from the ACT Parish, Peace in New London, Kerkhoven Lutheran and Calvary. Both Bethel and Vinje offered their members as Shepherds/Hosts. There are so many behind the scene stories that could be told including the staff at Erberts and Gerberts Sandwich Shop arriving at 2:30 a.m. to make fresh bread and pack 850 box lunches. All of this so God could grow the mission of the Christ through a day of learning and holy conversations. There were 163 congregations represented filling both church buildings to capacity.

Thanks to a great planning team which included Karen Koeder, Waverly Lutheran in Trimont; Michael Schaner, Bethel in Willmar; Caitlin Kodet, Gloria Dei in Redwood Falls; Michelle Kleene, Immanuel in Clara City; Barb Gerde, Barsness/Chippewa Falls in Glenwood; Cathie Helland, Calvary in Willmar; Pr. Chad Peterson, Vinje in Willmar; Pr. Bethany Nelson, Bethel in Lester Prairie; Pr. Jon Dahl, Bethel in Willmar; Pr. Amy Juel-Palmer, Vinje in Willmar; Pr. Janine Olson, Bethlehem in St. Cloud and Pr. Linda Pedersen, Grace in Brownton. Plus, thanks to our keynote speaker, Pr. Nadia Bolz-Weber from House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado for an innovative message.

Our integrity is based on God's gift of Jesus Christ, as Bishop Elizabeth Eaton's personalized message for the event said, based on Romans 7, saying "Not our work, but the work that has already been done for us through Christ." This work sets us free to live with integrity and be innovators in our lives and the life of our congregations. You can see her closing video by clicking here. (The Video will show Young Adults in Global Mission and a Malaria update before her personalized message, starting 8 minutes into the video.)

Minnesota Food Share
March Campaign
+Bishop Jon V. Anderson

One of the things we learned in The Listening Project was the breadth of concern about food insufficiency across our synod.

If you are not aware "during the 2015 March Campaign, Minnesota FoodShare will host a Pack the Pews weekend from Friday, March 20 to Sunday, March 22. Pack the Pews weekend is an opportunity for congregations across the state to engage their members in supporting Minnesota food shelves by bringing non-perishable food items to worship services. Invite people to pack the pews to fight hunger in your community.  Click here to learn more and how to participate.

2015 Day on the Hill,
March 10, 2015
A day of social justice advocacy at the MN Capitol.
Dignity in Democracy,
The concept of basic human dignity is at the core of our faith traditions. The recognition and protection of this dignity is also at the core of the social justice advocacy of JRLC. Policies that ensure a strong social safety net, that address economic justice, and that are based in our scriptural mandate to care for the least of these, are essentially policies that affirm the dignity and value of all members of our communities. Liam

+Bishop Jon V. Anderson

As I held him, smiling, I kept thinking about all the people God used to help Liam reach the point he could be safely born as our first grandson. They are just the beginning of all the people God will use to help him grow into the person he is called to be.  God's ongoing creating love is something to get your mind around even when you are holding your grandson for the first time.

About three months ago my daughter Laura entered into pre-term labor at 25 weeks.   After a week of hospitalization she went home for the next twelve weeks of bed rest. I would wake every morning to make sure there was not a text announcing they were back in the hospital.  Our first grandson was born on Jan. 27th. His name is Liam Cochrane.  He was five pounds and four ounces at birth.

We give thanks to God for the many people God used to help him arrive safely. There were the doctors and nurses - especially the nurses in labor and delivery who walked with Laura during the initial labor, there were the people God used to comfort and guide her in the all the scares along the way and her delivery.  I am thankful for Liam's mom who was patient and put up with the boredom and discomfort of a lot of non-productive labor through the weeks and then the final labor of giving birth. I am thankful for his dad who also sacrificed a great deal to be able to support his mother before, during and after the labor.  I am thankful for all the friends and family who helped them in this journey.

As I held him it also was a reminder of the fragile nature of Christ Jesus' birth. It was a reminder of how vulnerable Jesus was at his birth in a world without bilirubin lights and all the other supports we have for children born in our time. It was a moment full of joy after weeks of stress and fear and hope.

We have deeper sympathy for those who have lost children.  I had conversations with family members and others who lost children to premature birth in a time when the medical technology was not able to stop the relentless contractions of premature labor. I remember my cousin who was not so much smaller than Liam who we buried out near Marietta.  May God bring them peace even as they treasure the memories of their loved ones who died so young and trust in God's resurrecting grace.

We also have deeper understanding for all the mothers who are on bed rest now and others who have gone through this journey of premature labor.  May they experience peace and finally the joy of a timely and healthy birth.

Life is an amazing and fragile gift. May we all be good stewards of those whom God has given us to love and care for, especially newborns like Liam.
