We are proud to share with you a letter we received from Jessica Nipp Hacker, ELCA Malaria Campaign Coordinator. As of September 1, 2014, the Southwestern Minnesota Synod has given a total of $268,260.60 to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. The ELCA has raised over $12.8 million on the way to our $15 million goal.

"Thanks to the strong support from the Southwestern Minnesota Synod and other members of the ELCA, Lutheran malaria programs are empowering our partners in Africa and saving lives. Pastors are among the faithful leaders who are making a difference in their communities. The Rev. John Macumi is the pastor of a two-point Lutheran parish in Mishiha, Burundi. Through the Lutheran World Federation's malaria program in Burundi, Pastor Macumi has participated in extensive malaria training. He learned about malaria transmission, prevention and control, and now he teaches his congregation and other community members how to keep themselves safe from malaria.

We know that Pastor Macumi is not the only Lutheran pastor to preach about malaria in recent years. We are grateful for all you have done to lift up this campaign in your synod, with rostered leaders and lay leaders alike. Thank you for joining us in this mission to be church for the sake of the world."

Compensation 2015: Things to consider
+ Bishop Jon V. Anderson
I want to be sure you are aware of the coming deadline for deciding about next year's insurance and other benefits through Portico. The costs will be going up. Use the Portico calculator to determine employer costs to sponsor a plan member in the ELCA benefits program - a comprehensive package of benefits to help pastors, rostered laypersons and lay employees live full, whole, healthy lives. Oct. 17th is the deadline for your congregation to make a decision about a benefits package.

Our Compensation Committee will meet in the coming days to discuss the impact of these costs in our overall compensation guidelines. Pr. Don McKee wrote the following about their congregation's experience in the past and what he and his congregation learned in their research.

+ Pastor Donald S. McKee
Our Savior's Lutheran, Montevideo MN
Compensation Committee of our Southwestern Minnesota Synod, ELCA

Two years ago in my congregation, we appointed a committee to look into the insurance piece of the Pastor's compensation. Three persons were asked to compare our insurance with other groups or pools of employees around us. The committee looked at our local Hospital employees, local city workers and our county employees.

What they found was;
  1. We had the best coverage.
  2. When comparing apples to apples, our rates were close to each of these groups.
  3. That year one of the groups faced 22% increase in rates. Another one kept rates low by taking benefits away from employees.
  4. Everyone the committee talked with, was impressed with our system.
Several things to remember;
  1. We have the best disability of any pool of employees.
  2. According to Portico, we are 8 years older than the national average. 53 is our average age and that means higher rates.
  3. Portico benefits are bundled. This means that you receive retirement, disability, death benefit, health when your congregation sponsors you with Portico. You can waive health coverage if you are covered by your spouse's employer's health plan or if you qualify for a subsidy on the state exchange. As a Portico plan sponsor, your congregation cannot purchase health insurance for you. At the theological conference, Terri Endres, our Portico regional representative, shared with me that since 2006 Portico's health plan rate increases have consistently been below the national market average. Until all of the health plans have advertised their 2015 rates, we will not know how Portico's rate increase will compare with the national average.

Fundraiser Concert
Sunday, November 2nd, 2014 - 3:00 p.m.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church - Brooklyn Park, MN

Some of the most dynamic and innovative musical artists in the church are coming together to support the newly formed Center for Worship & Music Studies. A fundraising concert on November 2nd will feature Agape, Rachel Kurtz, Jonathan Rundman, John Kerns from the Spirit Garage, and the director of The Center, Jay Beech.

  "We are creating a new kind of worship and music training program, one that celebrates ALL the musical gifts of God's people," says Beech. "This includes everything from our rich hymn and choral traditions to the newest kinds of music from our own culture, as well as music from around the world."

"This concert will feature immensely gifted artists specializing in rock, hip-hop, and R&B styles, all of whom are driven by a deep faith and genuine love for the church. We are deeply grateful for their generosity and willingness to help grow this new ministry."

In addition to their individual performances, the musicians will also play some songs together. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this very eclectic "super-group." The concert will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2nd, 2014, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Park. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
