Thank you to everyone that completed the
Landscape!
782 people have taken the Landscape!
The Landscape survey is now closed.

782 - Wow!!!!

+Bishop Jon V. Anderson

784 leaders in our synod took the Landscape tool online as part of The Listening Project. Thanks for each of you who took the time to give voice to your experience and also to indicate your hopes and dreams.  Thanks to all of you who encouraged others to participate, too. This sample will give us some deep eyes into our life together in our synod. The Synod Council, Long Range Planning Team and the Listening Project Team will receive a report on Saturday at our synod council meeting.

We are working on building a God sized vision for the mission field that is and will be. It is easy to underestimate what God longs for in our personal lives and in our communal lives. It is easy to jump to a theology of glory which is focused on worldly categories of success and denies the broken-ness and suffering of this world. It is also easy to become pessimistic and notice only our work to do and challenges on the horizon. We are called to use our assets and hear Jesus calling us to follow him into God's preferred future. We are called to share the work of discernment and share the work of building our synod's life and mission. We are called to be more than consumers of God's Church but actually participate in the execution of steps that will help us realize God's dreams as best as we can discern them.

Join me in praying for The Listening Project and your synod. Again thanks for sharing your thoughts.  Thanks for all you are doing in your local mission field and community of faith. Thanks for the ways you work with sister congregations to serve the needs of people in your communities. We trust that we are deepening a conversation about our synod's future. Thanks for being a part of the holy stewing that has begun.

She now has a second calling as Pastor and mission developer for House of Grace, a new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregation in nearby Montrose.

Blog Post from LivingLutheran -

Do we miss hell?

By David Lose

Every once in a while when I served as a parish pastor, I would joke with colleagues or parishioners that stewardship would be a lot easier had it not been for Martin Luther. When they gave me a slightly confused look, I would say that I just thought it would be easier to raise money if I could threaten my people with hell, or at least with purgatory, rather than assure them they were justified by faith rather than their good works.

Just to be clear, it really was a joke in that I am regularly and incredibly grateful for the Lutheran witness to God's grace and the promise that we are, indeed, justified by grace through faith rather than through our own accomplishments. But ... read more.

ELCA young adults begin year-long journey of global service

ELCA New Release

Sixty-three young adults from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have begun a year-long journey in which they will "live and learn and serve" with ELCA companion churches and partner organizations around the world. The young adults are participants in the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission program - an international mission opportunity for young people from the ages of 21 to 29.

"The Young Adults in Global Mission program is, for me, among the clearest examples of why it matters that we are church together," said the Rev. Heidi Torgerson-Martinez, program director for the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission.

"Our Young Adults in Global Mission volunteers often find themselves deeply humbled by the ways that the ELCA rises up around them as they prepare to deploy for service... Read more.

Framing Youth Ministry - Reflecting God's Story

Fall Youth Workers Retreat

October 5-6, 2014

Shetek Lutheran Ministries, Slayton

"Frames are important. A picture frame gives perspective and focus to the picture within. The frame of a house gives a foundation from which rooms

can be built and decorated. Frames give understanding. Frames help us expand our understanding. Frames give purpose. In life and ministry, there is an overwhelming volume of information that competes for our attention and time. We can't be experts in everything, but framing youth ministry in a way that reflects God's story into our story is central to our youth ministry callings.

At this Youth Worker Retreat we'll explore:

  • "Framing Life Biblically"
  • "Framing Youth"
  • "Framing the Vision: Seeing Things New"
  • "Framing the Path: Practicing Things New"
  • "Framing Failure with Forgiveness"
Sessions will be taught by members of our Practicing Discipleship Team; Pastor Kathleen Ulland-Klinkner, Anders Meier, Jayme Ryan, Nancy Altmann, Dana Isaacson, and Alex Becker.
