"Catch Up Sunday" An idea for a special offering

How are your congregation's finances?

Has the winter been hard on your Sunday offerings, especially when worship was cancelled or only a few people could get to worship?

Here is a suggestion for a special offering to "Catch Up." A Sunday in May would work well, maybe May 4 or 18. Just ask folks to help you catch up with your offerings. You could set a goal of an average Sunday offering.

Create some excitement:

  • Do a skit the week before with someone arriving at church with their Ketchup bottle and someone else in a running shorts trying to catch-up, because they heard you were having a "Catch Up Sunday."
  • Plan to grill hot dogs/hamburgers and have a special picnic lunch.
  • Give out little ketchup packets attached to an envelope the week before to help people get excited or remember to bring their special offering.

Be creative and have fun! Here is a sample newsletter/bulletin announcement to get you started:

Summers Coming, Let's Catch Up from Winter

We are having a "Catch Up Sunday."No, we did not say Ketchup, like you put on your hot dog or hamburger. This catch-up is a special offering for the winter worship services that were lost to bad weather or low attendance because of cold, ice or snow.

Summer is finally coming, but like many congregations we are feeling the loss of offerings from a difficult winter. So on dates (suggested May 4 or 18) we are having a "Catch Up Sunday." You are asked to pray about your offering for this Catch Up Sunday as we hope to receive or exceed an average Sunday offering in this special appeal.

See you Date for our "Catch Up Sunday!"

Mission Support
+Bishop Jon V. Anderson
Mission support is what we call the gifts of congregations to support the life of the synodical expression and our churchwide expression of our denomination. We are thankful for the gifts that make it possible to engage leaders, equip congregations and serve in God's larger world.
Pr. Larry Strenge recently attended a meeting where three important questions were raised to always keep in mind as we think about mission support. I will use them to help you imagine how you lift up to your community of faith the importance of supporting your ministry and mission.

1) Why us? Why would you want to be supporting us (your synod)? Below is a picture that explains what your synod is good for. Info graphics are one way you can tell a story. Your synod focuses on developing leadership, supporting congregations and extending mission. In recent months we have been focusing on...read more

Peace 5K Trail Walk / Run
Pr. Mark Astrup
Peace Lutheran Church of Cold Spring has an incredible backyard - 40 acres of wooded grandeur. A consistent prayer in the life of Peace congregation is to use be creative stewards of this blessed natural resource.

A group of Peace runners and walkers formed a task force in late 2012. They had a vision to develop a Peace 5K Trail Run/Walk. The benefits of this vision include: drawing more people in the community to discover the wooded backyard of Peace; promote physical wellness; raise money for agencies that help feed the hungry; provide fun and friendly competition within the church and greater community. The task force worked hard: assertively getting businesses to sponsor the 5K; hiring a race management company (officially timing the event); commissioning a graphic designer in the congregation to design the t-shirt and participation medal); setting up on-line registration and a facebook page; garnering volunteers to help with registration, trail preparation, course guidance and organization of post walk/race party.

On June 20th, 2013 the inaugural Peace 5K Trail Run/Walk happened with 120 people from age 3 - age 79 participating. This 5K raised $1200 for our local Rocori Area Food Shelf and $1200 for Kids Fighting Hunger.

September 20th, 2014 will be next Peace 5K Trail Run/Walk. Look for registration on our website: peacelutherancoldspring.com soon.
