Kathryn Ostlie-Olson shared this poem by the French theologian and scientist in the Ministry in Context Newsletter for Luther Seminary. I keep savoring it and decided I would share it with you. - Bishop Jon V. Anderson

Above all, trust in the slow work of God.

We are quite naturally impatient in everything
to reach the end without delay.
We should like to skip the intermediate stages.
We are impatient of being on the way to something
unknown, something new.
And yet it is the law of all progress
that it is made by passing through
some stages of instability-
and that it may take a very long time.

And so I think it is with you;
your ideas mature gradually-let them grow,
let them shape themselves, without undue haste.
Don't try to force them on,
as though you could be today what time
(that is to say, grace and circumstances
acting on your own good will)
will make of you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new spirit
gradually forming within you will be.
Give Our Lord the benefit of believing
that his hand is leading you,
and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself
in suspense and incomplete.
 
Mission Support - 2013 Fiscal Year End

Thanks to the generosity of our congregations we received mission support of $1,978,921 in fiscal year 2013 (our fiscal year ends on Jan. 31st).

This was less than we had built our mission plan (budget) on. We know many factors such as our hard winter impacted worship attendance in two or three Sundays for many of our congregations. The last six weeks of the year's income did not follow normal patterns. Rather than try to figure out what all the factors are, we are grateful that due to careful management we believe we have still had a year where our expenses were below our income. We are still waiting for our audited numbers to return to us. Then we will know for sure.
Long Range Planning

What will our synod's leaders, congregations, mission, ministry and staff look like in three to five years? In ten years? In twenty years? We are called to watch the horizon so that we can serve the present and future mission of Christ.

Your synod's long range planning team will meet on Friday to engage in holy stewing about our future. The demographic experts have their theories of what will happen. But they cannot anticipate all the disruptive technologies and global events that will unfold in that time which will affect positively and/or negatively the web of our communities and context. We don't know how our culture will move even though we notice developing patterns.
We do know our God who creates and continues to create will be with us working in our midst. Our Lord who continues to heal and redeem us will have plenty of work. God's Spirit will continue to blow where it wants to blow.

As we look forward our synod is planning a mission start in Montrose on our eastern border with the Minneapolis Area Synod. Our application is in. We are thankful we have collaboration in both synods about this project. We have begun to wonder about other places in this border zone between our two synods. We continue to watch for places where we might plant new congregations and redevelop congregations to serve new mission fields. On April 12th we will host a gathering of area parishes in our synod to learn from one another and imagine going forward. Click here for more information.

Our Synod's Management and Mission Committee will be meeting in the coming days to build our budget for 2015. We know that the way that money is moving in our church is changing. Congregations are passing on to the synod and churchwide system a smaller and smaller percentage of their income. I remember when the expectation was 15% for mission support. Then early in my service as bishop we passed a resolution asking for 10% of income for mission support. Mission support for synods and churchwide is continuing to trend downward (that is before figuring in the impact of inflation). Inflation over the 25 years of our church body's life means that it now takes almost two dollars to accomplish the same thing as a dollar did at the formation of our synod and church body.


 
We believe we will need to find ways to add to the financial energy coming from congregational offerings. I will write more about that later. I am thankful for the work that has and will be done to bring our mission plan in line with our...read more.
Annual Congregational Reports

their congregational report!


Not sure if your congregation has completed this? Click here for a list of the 135 congregations that have completed their forms. There are still 113 congregations that have not completed their forms. If your congregation hasn't completed the Congregational Report please do that now! The quickest and easiest way to fill out your Congregational Report (Form A&C) is online.
 Click Here! Enter your congregation ID along with your 2013 password.


Your Congregation ID stays the same year-to-year and you can find your 2013 password on the form mailed to you in January by the ELCA. If you need your congregation ID or password please contact the synod office and we would be happy to get you that information. Also, if you have questions on how to fill out the form you can contact the Office of the Secretary at 1-800-638-3522 or the synod office at 507-637-3904.

The ELCA will accept completed forms online until May 31, 2014 and they will be included in the synod summary reports. Forms received after May 31st will not be included in the summary reports however the information will still be incorporated into the database and included in future calculations and statistical analysis, including the Congregation Trend Reports. So it truly is better late than never!

Every congregation has a constitutional responsibility to file these reports. This is an important ministry that provides congregations, synods, the churchwide organization, agencies and institutions with valuable information for evaluating and planning the mission of this church. Thank you for your effort and work in completing these forms on behalf of your congregation!
Ron Bervig Retirement

After some thoughtful reflection, Ron Bervig has shared with the ELCA Foundation his decision to retire from his position as Regional Gift Planner for Western Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota. The Foundation and the bishops of the EAND, NWMN and SWMN Synods thank Ron for his service and pray for God's blessings in retirement.

The ELCA Foundation is reopening the search process for a Regional Gift Planner for Western Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota.

In the coming weeks and months, contact Pr. Larry Strenge who will help you connect to regional gift planners in our region if you should need help.
Chaplains for Children Conference
April 28-30, 2014
National Child Protection Training CenterWinona State University
Registration ends March 25.
Chaplains for Children is designed for clergy, chaplains, youth ministers, faith leaders, counselors and other members of a faith community who may work with children or families impacted by child abuse. The course prepares students to recognize and respond to cases of sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. The course discusses in detail the impact of child abuse on a victim's sense of spirituality and offers concrete suggestions for working with medical and mental health professionals to assist a child in coping with maltreatment. The course also discusses ideal child protection policies for a faith based institution, including handling a situation in which a convicted sex offender seeks to join a congregation. The course includes a review of various child abuse case scenarios and a discussion on appropriate and inappropriate responses.

Due to a change in presenter availability on Saturdays, March 15 and March 22 we have decided to combine our events to one location and one time slot for our PIE events. Both dates will now offer only the afternoon (2:30-3 pie 3-4:15 presentation). The events scheduled at American, Windom (3/15) and St Stephen, Marshall (3/22) for the morning (9:30-11:15) have been combined with at the advertised afternoon locations of American, Worthington (3/15) and Granite Falls Lutheran, Granite Falls (3/22).

We apologize for this inconvenience to persons who had planned on attending the morning events. We thank you for making adjustments to your day and driving any extra miles for this valuable PIE presentation and the pie buffet.
