Dr. Lynne Panega

The final month of the 2015-16 school has arrived, and our Lancers continue to demonstrate academic rigor as they complete the first full week of Advanced Placement testing, which lasts through Friday, May 13. Lake Park is administering a record-setting number of AP exams this year. Thanks to the 2015 AP testing participation and graduation rates, Lake Park earned another national ranking.

The Washington Post announced America's Most Challenging High Schools List for 2016, and Lake Park ranked #32 out of 71 Illinois high schools. Even more exciting is that our ranking increased from #40 of Illinois-ranked high schools published on the 2015 list (based on data from the 2013-2014 school year). According to The Washington Post, just more than 10 percent of the approximate 22,000 U.S. public high schools earned placement on this year's Challenge Index list.

Equally impressive to the academic accolades are recent philanthropic contributions that Lake Park students and staff have been donating to causes locally and nationally:

* The Lake Park P.E. Department raised $13,457.78 for the American Heart Association through the annual "Hoops for Heart" campaign.

* The Cha Cha for Children fundraiser contributed $5,000 to Lurie's Children's Hospital.

* Earth Club students sponsored EarthFest and organized a carnival, bake sale, and a dodgeball tournament. They raised $3000 that will be split between donations to Flint, Michigan and The Huntington Disease Society of America.

* The German Club raised funds to help aid refugees arriving in Hamburg. Lake Park has an exchange program with Helene Lange Gymnasium in Hamburg. Through this fundraising effort, our students are supporting our partner school and the community in which they live.

* Future Medical Professionals Club and Earth Club collected over 100,726 pop tabs. Lake Park has collected more than 736,000 pop tabs over the past eight years. All monies raised by recycling these pop tabs are donated to the Ronald McDonald House at Loyola Medical Center.

Lake Park concludes the celebration of Staff Appreciation Week, May 2-6. We gratefully acknowledge all of our staff members who serve our students and community with Lancer pride and passion. Thank you!

Lake Park, Glenbard North Baseball Team Up
Come out tonight to Boomer's Stadium in Schaumburg and support Lancer baseball as they play against Glenbard North in a special fundraiser to benefit Chive Charities. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and $3 for kids.

Future GBN Panther, Brody Sharkey, is one of the strongest 10 year-olds you will ever meet. He has seen more in the last few years than any of us may see in our life time. Brody's little brother, Gavin, was born with Lissencephaly, an extremely rare disorder that affects development, also known as "smooth brain." Gavin was given a prognosis of a mere few months, but then something happened. He celebrated his 1st birthday, his 2nd, his 3rd and then his 4th. This little boy was beating all odds, and it appeared nothing could stop him. He celebrated his 5th birthday in April 2015. During those years, Gavin did things that were never thought possible, the biggest milestone of which was attending school. His big brother Brody was by his side from the day he was born until his very last breath this on September 11, 2015.

Brody, along with help from volunteers and the local Chive Chapter, Chive on Chicago, will be making "LemonAide" stands and placing them throughout Boomers Stadium for drink sales during the game. The Boomers organization has graciously shut down their beverage operations for the game so that the only beverage sales will come from the "LemonAide" stands. In addition to lemonade sales, ticket and t-shirt sales will also count towards Brody's goal to #Raise10K. Both schools may have a rivalry on the field, but for this event, they are working together for a great cause.

Lake Park Rube Goldberg Team Places 5th in Nationals
Congratulations to faculty sponsor Jimmy Kryger and the dozen students who comprised Lake Park's first ever Rube Goldberg Team to compete in national competition in Milwaukee last month.

The circus-themed machine, designed to take as many steps as possible to open an umbrella, ran perfectly for all three rounds of judging.

Accumulating over 700 hours of work on the project since September paid off for the team who not only captured 5th place in nationals, but also won the "Most Rube-like machine" award!
