In the final six weeks of the 2015-16 school year, our faculty and staff are reinforcing a message of encouragement to students to finish with a strong academic focus and pride for what they have accomplished. You may recall during first semester, Lake Park implemented a new semester exam schedule that addresses a state mandate requiring a full day of school (5 hours) for the last day of the school year. The schedule was designed with input from students, faculty, and administrators and will be used for second semester exams as well. View the final exam schedule. Although more information will be mailed home to parents in the coming weeks, I want to take this opportunity to preview the dates and format. Our final three days of attendance, (Tuesday, May 31; Wednesday, June 1; and Thursday, June 2), will include several exam periods, traditional instructional time and a 25-minute resource period each day. The instructional resource period is intended to be student-directed time used for independent studying, tutorial assistance or access to PPS supports. Attendance during all periods on each day is required. Students arriving late will not be given additional time to complete exams. Students who have an unexcused absence for a final exam will receive a zero for the exam and will fail the class. Similar to typical school days, bus transportation is provided, all class periods will meet and meal service is available; however, the class periods vary in length. Please note there will be no early releases on final exam days. I commend our faculty for their collaboration to arrive at these instructional decisions. They remain focused on timely and informed feedback to students through a use of traditional exams or performance-based assessment that reflects authentic achievement in content areas. Speeches, presentations, demonstrations, writing prompts, and lab activities can be used as capstone learning experiences that reflect the content and skills of particular courses. Similarly, the schedule affords opportunities for alternative educational activities like course feedback and evaluation, student reflection, goal setting, and enrichment. As we complete these final weeks, it is important for us all to play a role in encouraging students to keep up with their assignments and have regular school attendance. Rube Goldberg Team to Compete in Nationals
Best wishes to faculty sponsor Jimmy Kryger and the dozen students who comprise Lake Park's first ever Rube Goldberg Team to compete in national competition this weekend in Milwaukee. They earned the invitation following a first-place win in the Argonne National Laboratory Rube Goldberg State competition in February. The task this year was to build a machine that takes as many steps as possible to open an umbrella. The theme of their machine is a circus and it takes 55 steps to complete the task. The students started designing the machine in September and building in November, accumulating over 700 hours of work on the project. The final Rube Goldberg machine, which comes apart into six sections that fit into a cargo van, is 6 ft. x 6 ft. and 5 feet tall. View the finished design in action!
Through the sponsorship of the Rube Goldberg Inc., the national competition will include 18 teams from 5 different states. Lake Park's team is one of three Illinois schools represented. GO LANCERS!

Welcoming the Class of 2020
A spring Incoming Ninth Grade Parent Orientation program will be held on Monday, May 2 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Lake Park East Campus auditorium. The orientation program is designed to benefit parents; students do not need to attend because they will be visited by counselors and student ambassadors at school during the month of May. This important evening will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. with a large group session in the auditorium. During this session, information about the August orientation program, daily bell schedule, academic support opportunities, and academic growth expectations will be shared. After the opening presentation, parents will have the opportunity to select three different breakout sessions. This format allows parents to explore topics in more depth and ask questions of school leaders, counselors, and faculty about the transition to high school.

Commencement Box Suite Sale on April 26
The Class of 2016 Commencement ceremony will be hosted at the Sears Centre on Thursday, May 26, at 7:00 p.m. Avoid the rush and uncertainty of getting good seats by reserving a Commencement Box Suite! Securing one of 12 lower level box suites for the ceremony will eliminate the worry of saving seats for your family and friends. Your guests will enjoy light refreshments in the comfort of your special area and each box suite will be festively decorated. Eleven suites can accommodate up to 15 individuals and are available for $400 each. In addition, one deluxe box suite available for $600 can accommodate up to 24 people and has its own private restroom. All box suites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Proceeds will benefit the Lake Park High School Educational Foundation.
You may register by bringing the completed form with a check payment to the Lake Park High School West Campus lobby on Tuesday, April 26 between 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The first 12 families to register and pay on April 26 will receive the box suites.

Masquerade Prom
The 2016 junior and senior prom will be hosted on Saturday, May 21 at Venuti's in Addison, followed by a post-prom cruise from Navy Pier. New this year, prom tickets can be purchased online from Thursday, April 28 through Friday, May 6. Online ticket purchases require a credit/debit card.
Tickets can also be purchased with cash or check in the West Campus Student Activities Office from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on school days during the sales period. Please note that dinner seating will not be assigned. Post-prom attendees will be assigned a bus for the ride downtown and back.

Scholarship Recognition
The Lake Park High School Counseling Department will host a Scholarship program on Wednesday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. to honor graduating students who are the recipients of a college, athletic, corporate or local organization scholarship. To recognize your student in the program, please provide all award information to Mrs. Field in the West Campus counseling office. Copies of award letters can be delivered at school or scanned and emailed to mfield@lphs.org. Please note that Monday, April 25 is the deadline for publication.
Seniors with Unpaid Fees
December and June graduates will receive their diplomas at the commencement. Students with outstanding debts must be paid before a final transcript will be issued. Please see Ms. Helms in the main office to take care of any fees. After Friday, May 6, no checks will be accepted for payment; only cash or credit cards will be accepted for any unpaid charges. If you are not planning to participate in the commencement, please have a guardian notify Ms. Buchweitz by May 6 to make arrangements to pick up your diploma after Wednesday, June 1. Diplomas will not be mailed.

Lake Park's spring musical will be rockin' and rolling as the student cast and faculty staff present Grease in the East Campus Dice Auditorium. Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for students; and senior citizens, children under 13 and LP students with an ID are free.
Meet Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "T-Birds" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and "You're the One that I Want."

Social Studies Movie Night Series Concludes April 26
Make plans to attend the final screening in this school year's inaugural "Social Studies Movie Night" series on Tuesday, April 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium. Students, families and community members are invited to this free opportunity to enjoy the film selected by movie-goers during previous screenings. Students must bring a signed ticket/permission slip for entrance.
Jamal Malik, a penniless 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, is one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" The night before the final question is asked, he is accused of cheating. A police inspector is tasked with investigating Jamal, and while doing so uncovers the amazing ways in which Jamal was able to know the answers to each question.
Students will have the opportunity to analyze several components of Global Cultures and Human Geography. Numerous aspects of culture (language, religion, assimilation, acculturation, popular/folk culture), population and migration (creation and existence in slums), and economics (class system) are illustrated throughout this film.

Lancers "Light it up Blue" for Autism Awareness
Lake Park Transition students will host the 2nd annual Autism Speaks walk at East Campus on Friday, April 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Transition programs from Lyons Township High School, Leyden High School, UPC-Sequin, and WDSRA will be participating in the walk.
The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and funds for Autism Speaks. Kohl's Cares will donate $500 to this national organization to benefit individuals with Autism. To make a donation or participate in the walk, please contact Stephanie Hester.
The Puzzle Piece is a symbol reflecting the mystery and complexity of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Classes will be helping to raise awareness by decorating puzzle pieces that will be displayed during the walk.

Lake Park Offers Summer Camps for Middle School Students
June 27-30, 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon
This four-day program introduces female students in grades 5-8 to the world of engineering and manufacturing through the completion of several hands-on projects. Creativity is definitely encouraged! By the end of the program each student will have designed and built their own unique gadget. This program is based on the curriculum designed at Triton College for the GADgET (Girls Adventuring in Design Engineering & Technology) program.
August 1-5, 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This five-day hands-on program introduces male and female middle-school students (grades 6-8) to the fundamentals of engineering and precision machining. Students will use Autodesk Inventor software to create a personalized design for a wood end-table and report card magnet. Along the way, students will learn simple programming that will allow them to set-up a computer numerical control (CNC) ShopBot and CNC Mill. This summer experience will also feature a one-day field trip to a local manufacturing facility to see manufacturing first hand.

Summer School Registration Now Open
Lake Park will be offering seven Boot Camp classes this summer at East Campus. The classes are designed to provide enrichment and a sound foundation in different subject areas. All classes are offered on a non-credit basis. Classes will run depending on enrollment; therefore, a full refund will be processed if classes are cancelled due to low enrollment. Driver Education will be offered from June 13 to July 22. View more details and access the registration form that is due on Friday, May 6. Students enrolling in the program are required to attend a Driver Education Orientation that will be hosted on Tuesday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the East Campus Auditorium.

Through a continued partnership with Glenbard High School District 87, Lake Park families are invited and welcome to attend the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families. Programs are free and open to the public; no registration is required.
