As the calendar turns to March, Lake Park once again kicks off a busy spring season filled with standardized assessments. From March 8-24, Lake Park students in Freshman English (Written and Oral Communication) and Algebra 1 courses will take the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessment as directed by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The PARCC assessment was initially divided into two parts that measure different types of knowledge and skills. Because the testing will be consolidated into one assessment window this spring, the total time has been reduced by approximately 90 minutes. PARCC is still aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards and maintains its focus on critical thinking, concept mastery, and writing skills.

Like last year, students will take the assessment online via computer. The first group of students will begin testing on Tuesday, March 8 when those enrolled in Freshman English will take the English Language Arts 1 exam. The English test is followed by the math assessment for students enrolled in Algebra 1.  Students will be notified of their assigned test dates and room locations during an upcoming presentation about PARCC testing and from teacher announcements in class. Our staff will identify students in need of accommodations, and they will coordinate the testing sessions in a manner that supports all students. Additional information will be communicated to parents of students with educational plans.

Please be aware that the start and end times for the school day remain the same. Bus transportation schedules will remain consistent, and students will be able to participate in their routine after school activities as well.

Additionally, more information will be sent to families about the upcoming administration of the ACT to juniors and introduction of the PSAT to sophomores and freshmen. The 2015-16 school calendar originally designated Wednesday, April 13 as a SMART Day and ACT testing date. The schedule has recently been modified to reflect the national ACT testing date on Tuesday, April 19, which will be a non-attendance day for seniors. Please note that April 13 will remain a SMART Day for all students.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as Lake Park responds to Illinois' state mandated testing requirements. We appreciate our Lancers taking these exams seriously and our staff for accommodating the disruption to teaching.

Lancers Continue to Shine in State Competitions
Lake Park will be making a splash this weekend at the Illinois State High School Association swimming and diving competition. Senior swimmer Jeremy Dade and junior Eric Sgarbossa both qualified for the IHSA State Swimming meet last weekend at the Lyons Township Sectional. Jeremy, a first-time qualifier, advanced in the 50-yard freestyle. Eric, now a 2-time qualifier, advanced in two events: the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breastroke. Congratulations to 145-pound senior wrestler Jackson Schoen for competing at the recent IHSA State Meet hosted at the University of Illinois. Jackson defeated four state-ranked opponents on his way to claiming 3rd place.
