This week began with a dynamic professional development day for Lake Park faculty, one that centered on best practices for the use of instructional technology. On January 25, licensed staff members, administrators and even two of our Board of Education members engaged in a day of workshops that focused on topics such as using Google Drive, Google Apps and Chromebooks 101. This relevant, hands-on experience for staff is helping pave the way for 1:1 technology implementation for the Class of 2020.
Most impressively, the foundation of this program was built on the leadership of more than 30 teachers who enthusiastically volunteered to lead these presentations for their peers. The Institute schedule was built with nine concurrent sessions and three opportunities throughout the day to choose workshops. The content of the sessions ranged from introductory level for beginners to more advanced sessions for tech savvy teachers looking to incorporate more technology practices into their daily lessons.
The primary message conveyed during the opening general session was that high quality teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do. Our bigger picture vision is helping staff to understand how instructional technology supports that emphasis. We believe in relationships, collaboration, differentiation, sound instruction, rigor, challenges, assessment, preparation and involvement.
In a fully supported 1:1 environment, the new reality is not actually about the device itself, but rather what we expect students to do with the technology. Our focus will be on the 4 C's: creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking.
Lake Park teachers became Lancer learners by using Chromebooks for a day. Judging from their engagement during the workshops, evaluations following each session and the dialogue that continues this week, I can genuinely express how excited I am for the future of Lake Park's instructional technology.
I commend our 30+ faculty presenters for their willingness to share their time and expertise. Furthermore, all of our participants deserve recognition for their professionalism and commitment to "launch and iterate" during this process of growth. The remainder of this school year will focus on additional staff development, gathering feedback from the 1:1 pilot, and preparing for the 2016-17 "KickStart" implementation with freshmen.

Winter Play Takes Center Stage February 4-6
The Lake Park High School Theatre Department proudly presents Larry Shue's comedy The Foreigner. A fishing lodge in rural Georgia provides a quiet getaway for demolition expert, Froggy LeSeuer, so he brings his painfully shy friend, Charlie, along for a retreat. Through a crazy turn of events, Charlie overhears more than he should which forces Froggy to tell the other characters that Charlie speaks no English and is an honest-to-goodness Foreigner.
Director, Kathy Weber, states, "I chose this play because it is hilarious. The situations are ridiculous and every character is so quirky. It has been fun to prepare, and I can't wait to share it with our audiences!"
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for non-Lake Park students, free to Lake Park students, children under 13 and senior citizens. They can be purchased at the East Campus Dice Auditorium box office prior to the 7:00 p.m. performances on Thursday, February 4, Friday, February 5 and Saturday, February 6.

School Resource Officers Share Important Reminders
Hello from East Campus School Resource Officer Sarra and West Campus School Resource Officer Schwytzer. As we settle into second semester, we want to remind you about bringing high value items and large amounts of cash to school. Over the holidays, you may have received the newest gadget, a cool new watch or piece of jewelry, or a crisp $100.00 bill from a family member as a present. As much as you may want to show off new stuff to friends, school may not be the best forum to do so. This semester, there have already been a few instances of missing or lost wallets, phones, and other high value items. The good news is that in some cases, the items were recovered and safely returned to owners. We applaud those students who did the right thing and upheld The Lancer Way.The best practice to keep your new gifts safe is to avoid bringing high valued items to school. Jewelry, large amounts of money, designer clothing accessories, and the like, should be left at home. Bring only the essentials you need like books, supplies, and backpacks as well as enough lunch money for the day.
That's all for now. Stay safe out there and take care of one another.

Social Studies Movie Night Series Continues February 25
Make plans to attend the the next screening in the "Social Studies Movie Night" series on Thursday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium. Students, families and community members are invited to this free opportunity. (Extra credit will be available; students should see a social studies teacher for more details.)
"Remember the Titans" will be shown in honor of Black History month. This movie was specifically selected because it deals with the difficulties and triumphs of the integration of public schools from a high school perspective, while also the unifying characteristics that sports have in society. After viewing the film, students will have the opportunity to analyze the impact of Brown v. Board of Education on the issue of segregation; while also analyzing successful integration tactics employed during the Civil Rights Era.
Watch for the final movie to be announced for second semester at East Campus!
