Today marks the end of second quarter and the completion of final exams using the revised format and schedule. As I reported to the Board of Education on Monday during their monthly meeting, this has been a very busy and successful semester!
This week's Board meeting began with a moment of silence to honor Board of Education member Doug Denson who served the district since April 2013. The Lake Park school community learned last week about his sudden passing. Doug was a longtime resident and parent of three Lake Park graduates. Additionally, Doug served as a Board of Education member at our sender district, Medinah Elementary School District 11. We extend our deepest condolences to his family.Due to this unexpected loss for Lake Park, the Board has announced they are seeking applications to fill the vacancy. The appointment of a new Board member must occur by January 20, 2016, and this individual will serve until the next election in April 2017 when the seat will be up for election. Interested candidates should complete an application and submit it to the Lake Park District 108 administrative offices during office hours. Applications will be accepted through Monday, January 4, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. More information about qualifications is available on the district website. On December 11, the Illinois State Board of Education released current district and school-level report cards that now feature PARCC results (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) from testing conducted this past spring. The interactive school report card for Lake Park can be accessed here. A summary highlighting academic achievement and PARCC results will be presented to the Board during the January 25, 2016 meeting. We are especially proud how our students and staff have represented Lake Park in academics, activities, athletics, and the fine arts during this first semester. Our Board of Education, administration and staff wish everyone happy holidays, safe travels and a restful winter break! We look forward to the opportunities that 2016 will bring.

Lancers Spread Holiday Cheer
Lake Park students, teachers, staff and activity sponsors have been engaged in numerous philanthropic and volunteer efforts the past several weeks to help community neighbors:
"Sharing Tree" East Campus Sophomore Class Council one again sponsored the annual Sharing Tree to benefit underprivileged children in Bloomingdale Township. Lancer students and staff were invited to take a bell with age/gift description for families in need and return a wrapped gift with the bell taped to the present.
Future Medical Professionals and Earth Club sold lollipops to raise funds for the Woodfield Area Children's Organization. As a result of their fundraising efforts, FMP and Earth Club were able to donate $1000 to WACO. On December 4, the students and staff volunteers assisted underprivileged children in picking out holiday gifts for themselves and family members at the Walmart in Elk Grove Village. All purchases were gift wrapped, bagged, and labeled with the child's name. Members of FMP also traveled to Marklund Home this month. The students personally sponsored and purchased presents for 21 patients.

Last Chance to Register for ACT Test Preparation Course
In preparation for the ACT test dates available next spring for juniors, Lake Park will begin offering a course in January 2016 to develop the study skills to improve ACT scores. In addition to English, science, reading and mathematics preparation, the course emphasizes test-taking strategies and techniques. Students will gain exposure to ACT testing situations, practice and remediation, and explanations about ACT style correct questions and types of answers meant to distract from the correct response.

Plan Ahead: Purchase Books for Second Semester For convenience in purchasing the required titles for second semester, a virtual Anderson's Book Fair is available through January 8, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. All order forms must be turned in to the school library on this day. Students can purchase their books online or in-person by printing and completing an order form returned with exact change or a check made payable to Lake Park.
To determine which titles to purchase and the book prices, refer to the English class listed on your student's schedule and compare it to the order list. Books will be delivered to English classes approximately two weeks after the close of the book fair.

Automated Tardy Notification System to Pilot Next Semester
Prompt arrival to class is an important part of the learning process. Likewise, timeliness is an important life skill that translates well beyond school. To that end, beginning the week of January 11, 2016, Lake Park will pilot a new communication system to keep parents informed of their student's tardiness to class.
New next semester, the notification system will auto-generate messages to students via their Lake Park email accounts following the first tardy to a class. Communication to parents begins via email following the student's second tardy to an individual class and continues with each subsequent tardy during a given semester. The email notification will indicate the date, period, class, teacher and teacher email address. Parents have access to their student's tardiness and attendance records via Home Access Center at any time.
After a student's third tardy to a single class, a dean will speak personally with the student to explain the consequences that occur upon receiving a fourth tardy. Following the fourth tardy to an individual class, or tenth cumulative tardy across the school day, the Dean's office will assign consequences to students. Please note that tardies received during the first semester do not carry over to second semester. The pilot notification system is designed to keep students and parents aware of tardies as well as to promote dialogue with teachers about any discrepancies in attendance records. Parents are asked to contact teachers directly with questions or concerns about their student's timely arrival to class. Reminders about this implementation will be communicated to students and parents in January 2016.

State's Attorney Office to Present Student Assembly
Lake Park's Stand for the Silent organization is sponsoring and co-facilitating a student assembly at both campuses on Friday, January 15 with Melissa Hemzacek from the Illinois Attorney General's Office. The purpose of the assembly is to increase student awareness and understanding of issues surrounding digital citizenship. The assembly will focus on:* Students' online image
* Consequences of poor online behavior (legal and social)
* Finding a balance between life online and off
* Appropriate use of technology (including cell phones)
In advance of the assembly, the Office of the Illinois Attorney General has provided some helpful resources especially for the holidays and winter intermission when students have more 'free' time available. This year's Safe Shopping Guide includes guidelines on creating a positive digital culture within the home and ensuring children's digital safety. Additionally, Common Sense Media created a short video identifying questions to consider as you purchase technology for youth.
As you prepare for or continue to create a positive digital culture in your home, consider:
* Enabling parental controls/restrictions on all children's devices.
* Learning the trends: parent blogs (i.e. Common Sense Media), tech news sources (i.e. Huff Post, Yahoo News), App & Google Play Store top apps
* Checking in with parent peers; don't feel like you have to navigate this new world alone.
* Saying "no" if you are not comfortable with an app, site, game, etc.
