While it may seem difficult to believe, today already marks the conclusion of the first academic quarter in the 2015-16 school year. In these fast nine weeks, the Lake Park school community has united around the theme of "We Are One" and demonstrated tremendous pride and service to others.
This month kicked off with the inaugural "Make a Difference Day" in which over 400 Lancers participated in a day of service and helping the communities of Lake Park and beyond. From visiting nursing care centers and assembling care packages for cancer patients to assisting with a variety of projects on campus that benefited homeless shelters and our U.S. troops, the students and their coaches and sponsors enthusiastically donated their time by giving back to others. The energy of this collaborative service project helped to kick off an exciting Homecoming Week, which was celebrated with a theme of "Around the World" designed to inspire students how far they can go. The timing of the annual girls' powder puff game tied nicely into Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The participants and fans showcased a sea of pink and proceeds of more than $2500 benefited the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. The quality of these student programs would not be possible without the vision and commitment of our campus leaders. During October 19-23, Illinois will celebrate Principal Appreciation Week and it's my honor to acknowledge East Campus Principal Jim Roberts and West Campus Principal Janet Constien for their significant contributions. This school year marks their last in this role which makes the recognition even more special. The District recently announced Jim's promotion to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, effective with the 2016-17 school year; and Janet will begin a new chapter beyond Lake Park as she retires in June 2016. Congratulations and thank you to you both! With so much to be proud of already, I look forward with anticipation to the successes that lie ahead. Thank you for being a part of our school community and helping to demonstrate Lancer Pride!

Community Connection: Voice of Democracy Contest
The Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars' (VFW's) premier scholarship program since 1947. Each year, almost 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2.1 million in scholarships and incentives. Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the Post, district, state and national level.
The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program to provide students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles. Students compete by writing and recording a 3-5 minute audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme is: "My Vision for America."
Itasca VFW Post 5167 encourages Lake Park students to enter the Voice of Democracy contest for a chance to win prize money: $300 for first place, $125 for second place, and $75 for third place. Read the contest requirements and complete an entry by Sunday, November 1 for consideration.
For questions, contact VFW Quartermaster Carl Lostracco at (630) 773-2423. Entries can be mailed to or dropped off at 331 South Walnut Street, Itasca, 60143.
