With a focus on the future of Lake Park High School, the Board of Education unanimously approved recommendations for administrative restructuring, effective during the 2016-17 school year. The district carefully evaluated these decisions based on upcoming retirements and in the interest of strengthening our "We Are One" philosophy - fostering one culture that bridges our two campuses.
Last spring West Campus Principal Janet Constien announced that she will retire in June 2016. Jim Roberts (East Campus) and Janet have effectively served as building principals for the past eight years. Given Janet's planned retirement, as well as a long history of discussions regarding a one principal administrative model, Lake Park decided that the timing was right to move in this direction next school year. In addition to a single principal, two of the current Assistant Principal positions will be renamed as Associate Principal with additional responsibilities.
We spent considerable time investigating the single principal model and specifically looked at the structure of Lyons Township High school, which is also a single high school with a freshman/sophomore campus and a junior/senior campus.
In addition to reviewing the campus administrative structure, we also considered changes to our district administrative structure. For the past four years, I have assumed the combined roles of Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum. Given our discussions focusing on short- and long-term planning, Lake Park is re-establishing the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum.
An additional district level change involves Director of Operations and Maintenance Bob Ungaro, who is also retiring at the end of this fiscal year. We will not replace this position effective in 2016-17, but rather Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Jeff O'Connell will assume these responsibilities with increased support from our EC and WC Building Managers.
On August 24, 2015, the Board approved the following recommendations related to administrative restructuring effective for 2016-17:
* Jim Roberts, current EC principal, was named Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction
* John Gouriotis, current EC Assistant Principal, was named Lake Park High School Principal
* Tim Noverini, current WC Assistant Principal, was named WC Associate Principal for Student Services
The vacancy of Associate Principal for East Campus has been posted and will be hired internally. A hiring recommendation is expected at the September 28, 2015 Board meeting.
As sad as we are to be losing two of our very best through retirement, we look forward to the changes to our campus and district administrative teams. We welcome the year of transition ahead and embrace our philosophy: We Are One!

Mark Your Calendars: West Campus Curriculum Night Lake Park parents are invited to attend Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 9 for West Campus. During the evening parents will have the opportunity to follow their student's schedule, attend teacher presentations about learning objectives and course expectations, and visit with members of the Pupil Personnel Services department. In addition, informational sessions highlighting technology initiatives such as Google Apps for Education will be offered.
Anderson's Book Fair
In addition to the use of classroom textbooks, which is included in student registration fees, novels for English classes must be acquired by students at an additional cost. For your convenience in purchasing the required titles for fall semester, Anderson's Book Fair will be held on-campus from Monday, August 24 through Friday, September 11. The book fair will also be available in the library during curriculum night. During those times, books can be purchased at the school library using cash, credit card, or with a check written to Lake Park High School (with student ID in the memo line.) To determine which titles to purchase and the prices of the books at the book fair, refer to the English class listed on your student's schedule.
To avoid these costs, students may check the books out from a local public library or the school library, though limited quantities are available. If students wish to purchase their own copies, they may do so from the store of their choosing (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Half-Price Books, etc.), paying attention to the ISBN number, which is located on the back of the book, near the bar code.

Innovation Center Open House Showcases New Facility
Nearly 200 junior and senior students at West Campus began the semester experiencing classes in a newly built 3,000 square foot engineering and precision machining facility. The state-of-the-art "Innovation Center" represents the collaborative vision of the District 108 Board of Education and a Technology Advisory Council comprised of more than 25 business professionals and industry leaders. On Thursday, September 24, Lake Park faculty members and students will enthusiastically showcase their new learning environment during a community open house scheduled from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at West Campus. All are welcome to attend; guests will have the opportunity to tour the Innovation Center, observe machinery demonstrations, and attend a brief recognition program from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
The Innovation Center is designed to support curricular opportunities and increasing demand for skilled workers in the engineering and precision machining industries. Momentum began in 2013 when Lake Park became a recognized Project Lead the Way (PLTW) School - the nation's leading science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program - and secured a $35,000 grant for three years to support implementation. Lake Park was also named a recipient of a 4-year, $50,000 grant from the TMA Education Foundation (Technology and Manufacturing Association), an organization dedicated to supporting technology, manufacturing and engineering educational initiatives.
Concurrently in 2013, council members launched an aggressive schedule of site visits to schools, trips to local manufacturers, and countless meetings with equipment vendors, school administrators and architects to develop a project scope for the Innovation Center. The resulting footprint includes an engineering design lab and precision machining lab.
Lake Park's Board of Education understands the benefits of a pathway program like PLTW that provides students with beneficial exposure to technical concepts and hands-on experience with equipment and software. Dynamic partnerships with industry experts ensures that the high school is making decisions in the best interest of preparing students for their futures. Lake Park students will graduate workplace- and college-ready and even have the opportunity to earn a competitive advantage by testing for industry-approved certifications. They will also earn dual credit through the College of DuPage.
The generosity of corporate and individual donors to date totals nearly $100,000 in equipment and tools and has been impactful to this emerging program. Lake Park will continue to seek local and national grant opportunities that can provide additional resources for growth.

School Resource Officers Offer Advice to Prevent Theft
Hello from East Campus School Resource Officer Sarra and West Campus School Resource Officer Schwytzer. As school has gotten back into full swing, we want to remind you about theft and what can be done to prevent it. Here are a few tips:
- Lock up your belongings before and after school. Double check your lockers, and be sure to spin the dial and check the latch before moving on. Keep your bags and belongings within your sight at all times. Lock up your valuables and bags in gym classes or for try-outs.
- Prior to leaving your classroom, gym class, or study hall, check your surrounding area for personal belongings. Give yourself an extra minute for that "self-pat down" (do I have my wallet, phone, bag, etc.?)
- Do not leave belongings laying around unattended. An old adage is "If it is adrift, it may be a gift." Someone determined to wrongly take something that doesn't belong to them, looks for opportunity at every turn. If the opportunity is not there, the theft will not take place. When charging a cell phone or tablet, keep it in sight at all times.
- Avoid bringing high valued items to school. Jewelry, large amounts of money, designer clothing accessories, and the like, should be left at home. Bring the essentials, books, supplies, and backpacks. Bring enough money for lunch for that day, no more.
- Lastly, if you see someone else's property laying around and unattended, pick it up and turn it in to the nearest staff member, teacher, or SRO. You never know if a reward may be attached to that item!
That's all for now. Stay safe out there and take care of one another. Please keep the family and fellow officers of the recently slain Fox Lake Officer in your thoughts.

AP Capacity Survey to be Administered Sept. 14-18
This past spring, Lake Park was accepted to the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate (AP/IB) Equity & Excellence Project, a partnership supported by the Google Global Impact Awards and the Education Innovation Laboratory at Harvard University. The District is participating in a national cohort of 120 other school districts and receiving match-funded technical assistance to help close the achievement gap and ensure students of every background have opportunity and access to a rigorous education.
During the week of September 14-18, all students at Lake Park will participate in a survey conducted jointly by Lake Park High School and Equal Opportunity Schools. The survey is 20 minutes in length, and students will take the survey during their Physical Education classes.
The survey will ask students about their educational goals, their favorite classes in high school and their understanding of Lake Park's Advanced Placement courses. Through the student responses that are gathered, we will be able to identify student who may need support and encouragement to participate in an AP class; we will identify mentor adults in the school building who will be available to support these students in their work; and we will strengthen our curricular offerings.
Our teachers and staff members have also recently been involved in contributing to the survey process. Parents or guardians can contact the school guidance counselors or West Campus Principal Janet Constien if they have additional questions about the survey.
