Superintendent's Column

Dr. Lynne Panega

This week marked the successful completion of the 2014-2015 school year, and what a tremendous year it has been from start to finish! On Tuesday evening, Lake Park celebrated the 58th Commencement Ceremony recognizing 677 graduates in the Class of 2015 who have now joined our alumni community known as "Lancers for Life." The evening highlighted the academic achievements of our students as well as the philanthropic efforts totaling an impressive amount of more than $58,000.

In the last issue, I was happy to share news about Lake Park's national ranking in U.S. News & World Report's 2015 List of Best High Schools. I am proud to share another academic accolade that was recently announced. Lake Park was named to The Washington Post list of "America's Most Challenging High Schools." The annual report calculates and ranks the nation's public high schools using an index formula that is a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement tests given at a school each year divided by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June of that year. We are proud of our rigorous and comprehensive curriculum and especially our students for their level of participation in AP testing. Lake Park High School is ranked No. 40 out of the Illinois high schools that made the list. The complete Washington Post report is available here.

Even though finals have ended and the faculty have left for summer, the campuses will still be busy with the start of summer school and athletic camps in June. This summer, teachers will also be engaged in a variety of professional development activities from "Lancer University" courses offered onsite by our instructional technology leaders to presenting at conferences across the U.S. Next month also marks the rollout of registration for the 2015-2016 school year, which will be entirely online and provide families with convenient 24/7 access.

As always, thank you for your outstanding support of Lake Park students and staff! May you have a safe, enjoyable and restful summer break. We look forward to all that the new school year will bring when students return on Wednesday, August 19.

Future Medical Leaders Make Donation to Lurie Children's

The proceeds from the 3K Color Fun Run hosted at West Campus in April were delivered by a group of Lancers who are involved in the Future Medical Leaders club and were instrumental to the success of the inaugural event.

A check in the amount of $3750 was donated to the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago to benefit the Center for Cancer Research and Blood Disorders.

In addition to making the check presentation, the students were able to tour the facility, which has a 130 year legacy of excellence and represents the largest pediatric provider in the region.

Memorial Garden Dedication Scheduled for May 30

The Lake Park Educational Foundation Board of Trustees invites you to celebrate the dedication of the Lake Park Memorial Garden at West Campus on Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

The Lake Park Educational Foundation appreciates the generosity of the Lake Park community in supporting the Memorial Garden project.  While the retail cost of the Memorial Garden was $35,000, the funds needed to complete the project were decreased to $25,000 since ARCON Architects donated the architectural design services and Lake Park maintenance staff members provided the labor. In addition, the following local businesses are providing in-kind donations of plants and materials: Earth Care, Inc.; Platt Hill Nursery; Schwarz Nursery & Garden Center; and Shemin Nurseries, Inc.

In addition to the Lake Park Educational Foundation dedicating funds to the project, Lake Park staff, families, board of education members, and local residents and businesses rallied to support the creation of the Memorial Garden, donating over $30,000. The additional funds will be used to enhance an existing memorial area at East Campus. Some of the money will also be set aside for future maintenance of the Memorial Garden.

Lake Park to Host ACS Relay for Life

Teams are forming for Relay For Life, Roselle, Bloomingdale, Itasca and Medinah that will be held on Friday, June 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Lake Park High School East Campus.  Relay For Life is a tribute to those who have been lost to cancer, a celebration of those who have survived cancer, and a hope for those who currently face cancer that one day through our efforts cancer will be eliminated.  New this year, the Relay For Life hours will be hosted from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.

Each year, more than 4 million participants in over 20 countries come together to raise funds and awareness through the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life events. To form a team, register online at www.relayforlife.org/roselleil or contact Maryann Grygiel, Event Chairperson, at mobysmom2k1@yahoo.com or at (630) 893-6647.

Teacher of the Year Awarded by Air Force Association

Lake Park mathematics teacher Bill Roloff received a surprise recognition in his West Campus classroom from Jerry Ashley of the Air Force Association. Bill was nominated by colleague Kathy Lovelace-Birk for the Teacher of the Year recognition from the AFA Chicagoland/O'Hare Chapter 142.  He was awarded this honor by the local chapter for his work with STEM related education, and his nomination will be submitted for consideration at the AFA state level competition.

Award recipients receive a check for $250, a Certificate of Excellence, AFA portfolio and pen, a Chapter Teacher of the Year pin, and a complimentary Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education Membership sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol.

The purpose of the program is to recognize classroom teachers at the chapter level for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science and math (STEM) and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow's technologies. This is a unique opportunity for chapters to reward special teachers who are furthering excellence and making attending class an adventure.
