Superintendent's Column

Dr. Lynne Panega

The arrival of May today signals our last official month of the 2014-2015 school year. In just a few short weeks on Tuesday, May 26, the Lake Park school community will be celebrating the Class of 2015 graduation ceremony at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates. The milestone moments for our graduating seniors have begun, and many evenings throughout this month will be filled with recognition, awards and scholarship presentations. We are proud of their academic achievements and co-curricular accomplishments!

As our Lancers in the senior class prepare for what comes next, so too do our incoming freshman representing the Lake Park Class of 2019. Parents of current eighth graders are invited next Monday, May 4 to participate in the final orientation program this year. The event is designed for parent participation only. Lake Park counselors, deans, the School Resource Officer, and student ambassadors will be visiting eighth grade students at middle schools during the month of May. This valuable program consists of small group discussions and the opportunity for students to ask questions about all aspects of Lake Park.

This month is also noteworthy because we have begun the rollout of our new district website, which will enhance our external communication and provide a more user-friendly experience for online visitors. If you visit the site over the course of the next week, you will notice significant changes that include a much more visual focus. The creation of four global icons - grades, calendar, directory and e-pay - provides one-touch access from any device to the areas visited most frequently on the website. Their prominent position at the top of the district homepage allows parents and users easy access to these high-touch areas without further navigation. We are excited about the new website's responsive design to mobile devices, search capabilities and translation abilities. Stay tuned for continued enhancements of content and features!

Undoubtedly, the final weeks of this year will move as quickly as it seems this year has gone already. We commend our students who continue to stay academically focused as evidenced by the record number taking Advanced Placement exams during the weeks of May 4 and May 11. Our Lancers also continue to represent Lake Park on the stage, on the field and in volunteer and fundraising efforts throughout the community. Thank you for supporting Lake Park and contributing to the successes of this academic year.

Welcoming the Class of 2019

A spring Incoming Ninth Grade Parent Orientation program will be held on Monday, May 4 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Lake Park East Campus auditorium. The orientation program is designed to benefit parents; students do not need to attend because they will be visited by counselors and student ambassadors at school during the month of May.

This important evening will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. with a large group session in the auditorium.  During this session, information about the August orientation program, daily bell schedule, academic support opportunities, and academic growth expectations will be shared.  After the opening presentation, parents will have the opportunity to select three different breakout sessions.  This format allows parents to explore topics in more depth and ask questions of school leaders, counselors, and faculty about the transition to high school.

Eat Local to Support Junior Class Fundraising for Prom

Still looking to make plans for tonight?  Why not catch a game (White Sox at 7:10 p.m. and the Blackhawks at 8:30 p.m.) and grab dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings to benefit the Junior class as a fundraiser to help students with the cost of Prom.

Print this promotional flyer and present it to the associate taking your order at the Bloomingdale location anytime until 11:00 p.m.  Buffalo Wild Wings will contribute 10 percent of all participants' pre-tax receipts on Friday, May 1.  Bring your appetite and support our Lancers!

Lancer Semifinalist in U.S. Presidential Scholar Program

Congratulations to senior Katarina Martucci of Roselle who has been named one of 565 semifinalists in the 2015 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and represents one of only 20 semifinalists in Illinois. The semifinalists were selected from more than 4,300 candidates on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character, and involvement in the community and school activities.  Semifinalists were chosen by a panel of distinguished educators after a review of students' essays, self-assessments, descriptions of activities, school recommendations, and school transcripts.

Katarina has excelled academically throughout her Lake Park career; she scored a perfect 36 on the ACT, is a National Merit Finalist and has earned straight As all four years.  She is very active in her school and community, namely theatre, choir, National Honor Society and St. Walter Youth Ministry, among others.  Katarina will be attending Fordham University in New York City in Fall 2015 to pursue a major in International Political Economy.

Final selection of the Scholars will be made by the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of eminent citizens appointed by the President, and will be announced in May.  The Commission will select one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. students living abroad; up to 20 students representing the visual, literary and performing arts; and 15 students at-large.

Celebrate Prom 2015 Old Hollywood-Style

The 2015 junior and senior prom will be hosted on Saturday, May 23 at Venuti's in Addison, followed by a post-prom cruise from Navy Pier. One-day prom ticket sales will be held tomorrow, Saturday, May 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the West Campus student cafeteria.

Seniors only may purchase tickets from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon; juniors may purchase tickets from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Visit the 2015 Prom Website for more information about ticket sales, guest registration and dress guidelines.

Spring Musical Takes Center Stage

Did you miss opening night of the spring musical?  Then be sure to make weekend plans to see the Theatre Department's additional performances of Annie on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the East Campus Dice Auditorium.  Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for students; and senior citizens, children under 13 and LP students with an ID are free.

Leapin' Lizards!  The comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world's best-loved musicals.  Based on the popular comic strip, Annie has become a world-wide phenomenon and features some of the greatest musical theatre hits ever written including "Tomorrow."

Despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930's New York City, she is determined to find her parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.  With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, Annie escapes to NYC. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie (freshman, Amanda Brommel) foils Miss Hannigan's (sophomore, Angela Krokos) evil plans and even befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (sophomore Julian Boryszewski).  She finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks (junior, Zach Koptik) his personal secretary Grace Farrell (senior, Francesca Catalano), and a lovable dog named Sandy.  Annie is the perfect family-friendly musical!

Lancers "Light it up Blue" for Autism Awareness

Pathways East Campus students sponsored a school wide Autism Awareness campaign called "Light it Up Blue" this week before school, after school, and during lunch hours.

The Autism Speaks foundation sent puzzle pieces for Lake Park to create a school wide mural.  Clubs, teams, staff and classrooms were encouraged and invited to help spread awareness by buying a bracelet, popcorn and decorate a puzzle piece displayed in the Lake Park Mural.

Lake Park also came together as ONE by hosting a "Light It up Blue" friendly game between the Girls softball team and the Boys baseball team.
