Superintendent's Column

Dr. Lynne Panega

The final weeks of the 2014-2015 school year have arrived, and the Lancer community is excited about the moments of recognition still to celebrate. Earlier this month on Election Day, the Lake Park High School Board of Education incumbents Bob Marino, Barb Layer and P.J. Olzen were reelected to 4-year terms. We appreciate their commitment to our students, families and communities and look forward to the continued leadership they will provide for the District.

Last evening at the 7th Annual Spirit of Excellence banquet, Lake Park had the privilege of recognizing 17 senior students, four staff members and three alums who have consistently demonstrated excellence. We always appreciate the opportunity to recognize our very own and to welcome back "Lancers for Life" to hear how their experiences prepared them for the world beyond high school.

Additional recognition programs are upcoming from the National Honor Society induction ceremony on Wednesday, April 29 to the annual Scholarship and Awards Night for seniors on Wednesday, May 6. While many of these special moments specifically celebrate the Class of 2015, I must give credit to the entire student body for their attendance rates and focused attention demonstrated during an exceptionally busy spring of assessment testing.

The statewide PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) exam was administered to freshmen prior to spring break, and the end-of-year PARCC assessment will already commence the week of April 27. Our students showed testing resiliency this week with the PLAN exam given to freshmen and the Practice ACT proctored to sophomores. The junior class should also be commended for their outstanding engagement with the ACT test last month. Many of these same students will soon be taking Advanced Placement exams next month.

It impresses me and makes me proud as Superintendent to see how our Lancers balance their rigorous academic workloads and still find time to participate in extracurricular activities, volunteer in the community and work part-time jobs to save money. And as our students juggle the busyness of the last six weeks of the semester, I encourage you to help make it memorable for them by attending their final award programs, concerts, performances and competitions yet to come this spring.

Let's all remember:

Lancer Named a Golden Apple Scholar of Illinois

Congratulations to senior Claire Dwyer of Bloomingdale who has been selected among the 200 members recently named to the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Class of 2015. A highly competitive program, the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois seeks the best and brightest of Illinois youth interested in a teaching career. Those selected receive advanced teacher preparation through Summer Institutes that give students early practice and exposure to the art of teaching and financial assistance for college. Over 1,600 nominations were received this year, and the rigourous selection process evidences the excellence of the Scholars chosen.

Curtain Rises on Spring Musical

Leapin' Lizards!  The comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world's best-loved musicals.  Based on the popular comic strip, Annie has become a world-wide phenomenon and features some of the greatest musical theatre hits ever written including "Tomorrow."

Despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930's New York City, she is determined to find her parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.  With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, Annie escapes to NYC. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie (freshman, Amanda Brommel) foils Miss Hannigan's (sophomore, Angela Krokos) evil plans and even befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (sophomore Julian Boryszewski).  She finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks (junior, Zach Koptik) his personal secretary Grace Farrell (senior, Francesca Catalano), and a lovable dog named Sandy.  Annie is the perfect family-friendly musical!

The Theatre Department presents Annie on Thursday, April 30, Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the East Campus Dice Auditorium.  Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for students; and senior citizens, children under 13 and LP students with an ID are free.
