Superintendent's Column
As Lake Park begins spring break, we know that the final weeks of the school year are quickly approaching and with that comes much excitement and celebration. The Board of Education, administration, faculty and staff look forward to honoring the achievements of the Class of 2015 as well as recognizing the successes of all our students.
Additionally, this time of year also brings planning and preparation for the 2015-2016 school year. Families will begin receiving information next month about summer school opportunities for bridging or transitional purposes, credit completion, and enrichment. The introduction of summer "boot camp" classes will even allow students to enroll in non-credit classes. Developed and taught by Lake Park faculty, these classes range from introductory concepts to Advanced Placement collegiate level experience. Look for more information soon!
I previewed last month that Lake Park will move to a registration process that is entirely online for next school year. The technology department has been working to develop a program that will help parents navigate through the required documentation and provide real-time access to fees owed. The benefits of transitioning to this system include greater efficiency, improved accuracy and the convenience of 24/7 access. The campuses are currently planning summer walk-in dates to assist families, provide computer access and answer registration questions. You can expect to receive a mailing in early June with more information about registration dates and deadlines, along with PIN information to access your account.
Although our teachers and students will be away during the week of spring break, our campuses will still be open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We are excited that construction will commence next week on the new Innovation Center at West Campus. The approximately 3000 square foot addition, slated for completion for the 2015-2016 school year, will house the District's Engineering and Precision Machining program. The new building is designed to support the curriculum and increasing demand for skilled workers in these industries.
As you can tell, the weeks ahead will be filled with positive momentum and enhancements. We look forward to the safe return of our students and staff on Monday, April 6 and the anticipation of all that is to come for our entire school community!

Athletics and Activities Fair to Welcome Class of 2019
An Athletic and Activity Night for incoming students and parents will be held on Wednesday, April 8 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at East Campus. After a brief introduction in the gymnasium, families will then attend "Meet the Coach / Sponsor" breakout sessions throughout the building. Lake Park Boosters and sports and activities will display their offerings at the Activities Fair in the cafeteria.
The orientation program is designed to benefit students and parents by learning about Lake Park's athletics and activities programs in advance of next school year. Attendees can have their questions answered by coaches, sponsors and students currently in the program. This provides Class of 2019 students with time to consider their choices prior to the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. View an electronic copy of the co-curricular opportunities available and start dates for next fall.

Service in Action Sponsors Dodgeball Tournament
Senior students enrolled in Service in Action (SIA) are hosting the 4th annual Lake Park Dodgeball Classic and Fun Fair on Friday, April 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Campus gymnasium and field house. The event includes raffle prizes, t-shirts, music, ice cream and concessions. Admission is $3 for general admission to watch Dodgeball, attend the Fun Fair and play per game, or $5 for unlimited Fun Fair games including an inflatable obstacle course and dunk tank.
This year's event will benefit DuPage County PADS and the Noah's Arc Foundation. SIA students would like to thank Edvin Alijagic from Bounce Wizard for the inflatable obstacle course; Vince DePaul from Your House Academy, grandfather of SIA Student Arianna Diaz, for his generous donation to make this event possible; the Booster Club for allowing SIA to use the concession stand and donate a portion of the profit to the chosen charities; and various businesses in the community who have generously donated items for the raffle.
Service in Action combines academic instruction with experiential learning opportunities in the form of public service projects, field experiences, and public-sector job shadowing. Every project completed in SIA is done with the intent to positively impact change on a surrounding community (school, local, state, region, world). Creating and implementing service projects is an essential objective of the class, but students also set goals, evaluate progress, challenge assumptions, prioritize choices, take risks and create individual learning opportunities.

"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania" with New York Times reporter Frank Bruni at Glenbard West High School, 670 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a terrifying and occasionally devastating juncture, preceded by test prep, tutors, all sorts of stratagems, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say yes and which say no. That belief is wrong. It's cruel. And in this presentation, bestselling author Frank Bruni will explain why, sharing the fruits of the research, thinking and interviews he did for his brand new book, Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania, which was published this month.
Tuesday, April 14, 7:00 p.m.
"Parents, Teens, Parties, and the Law: Emerging Trends in the Teen Party Scene" in the auditorium at Glenbard East, 1014 S. Main St. in Lombard.
If you have a teenager, you have probably done your share of worrying about the risks that are out there. And the risks are different for every teen. As your teens are forced with difficult choices and intense challenges, so too are parents. Join us for this compelling discussion on the realities of the tough teen topics. Learn about the current social trends and the alcohol and drug issues affecting youth today.
