Superintendent's Column

Dr. Lynne Panega

From academic to co-curricular achievements, our Lancers are consistently earning local, regional and national recognition. The motivation for our students to succeed starts at home, and the direct benefits of parent engagement are clearly evident in their accomplishments. But equally impressive is the number of parents we see on-campus helping to celebrate those memorable moments with their student. This week the Freshman Honors assembly in the East Campus Auditorium was standing room only as parents watched their sons and daughters receive academic recognition for their first semester of high school.

Lake Park has countless opportunities for parent engagement, and we encourage you to take advantage of the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, February 26 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This evening allows parents to meet one-on-one with teachers and learn about your student's progress. Scheduling information, including step-by-step instructions with logins to register electronically, was mailed home earlier this week. The parent scheduler allows you to select times that are convenient for you. The site can be accessed here until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25.

Another important component of parent engagement is listening to your feedback. Last month, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey site opened providing parents, students and teachers a unique opportunity to have a voice in improving their schools statewide. Our Board of Education and administration value your input, and we ask you to please invest approximately 10-15 minutes to help us understand how Lake Park is meeting your expectations and your student's needs.

This school year, Lake Park has been helping to promote the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) as additional resources for our families. A comprehensive parent program with 30 years of experience, GPS provides a year-long calendar of national speakers at no cost to attendees. We appreciate feedback from parents who have said how valuable these programs are to attend. The upcoming event on Thursday, February 19, "A Powerful Lesson: Living with the Consequences" features Mark Sterner's tragic story that has been presented to over two million students. His powerful message forces students to confront their own decisions and consider the everlasting impact.

Parent attendance at our events and programs always makes them more meaningful. We appreciate your continued support and feedback, and hope you will take advantage of opportunities to participate throughout the remainder of the year!

Hoops for Heart Fundraising Culminates Today

Lancer Nation will replace navy blue and white school colors today with a sea of red to support the annual Hoops for Heart fundraiser. Since 1998, Lake Park's Physical Education Department has been raising money for the American Heart Association through a nationally sponsored event called Hoops for Heart.  All monies raised for this annual event are donated to the American Heart Association for research in the fight against heart disease.

The format of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in 2004 helped to increase participation and generate more enthusiasm from the student body. In its first year of the new format, Lake Park raised $1,946.75. Since 2004, the PE Department has raised $80,419.82, with the best one-year total at and amazing $16,124.23 in March 2011.  Last year, Lancers raised an impressive $13,068.72 through t-shirt sales, concession sales and the basketball tournament.

The PE Department has challenged the Lake Park school community to achieve a new benchmark at this year's Hoops for Heart tournament.  Please consider making a donation via the online fundraising page

Medical Vaccinations

In light of the recent measles outbreak in neighboring communities, the school nurses have confirmed that Lake Park's overall student vaccination rate is 99.2 percent. The majority of people who contract measles are unvaccinated. Parents in the state of Illinois have the right to religiously object to vaccination for their children, and there are a handful of students who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. Together they represent a very small minority, bringing the unvaccinated students for the measles shot in Lake Park to 0.5 percent - a significantly low number due to the important work at both campuses to ensure immunization compliance with all state health requirements. Families who object to immunizations are held to districtwide procedural requirements.

The DuPage County Health Department has released public health resources to ensure families have factual information including side effects and knowledge of how measles can spread.  Consult the DCHD, your primary healthcare provider or a school nurse if you have additional questions.

MCV Vaccination Requirement for Fall 2015

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, all students entering the sixth and twelfth grades next school year (Fall 2015) will be required to show proof of recent meningococcal conjugate vaccination (MCV).  All sixth graders will be required to show proof of one dose received on or after 11 years of age.  All twelfth graders will need to show proof of receiving two doses unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16 years of age is required.  This vaccination will prevent a student from a severe form of bacterial meningitis as well as other illnesses caused by this bacterium.

Some students may have already received this vaccine.  In this case, parents must simply provide the school verification of receiving MCV by August 1, 2015.  Read more about the vaccine and documentation needed to comply with this new requirement for students entering the twelfth grade.

Parent-Teacher Conference Scheduler Now Available

Lake Park High School will host parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, February 26 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at both campuses. These conferences allow parents/guardians an opportunity to meet with teachers on an individual basis.  Parents are encouraged to meet with as many teachers as possible.

Students will have a half-day of school and follow a SMART-day schedule with dismissal at 12:08 p.m. for West Campus and 12:48 p.m. for East Campus.

The electronic conference scheduler is available until Wednesday, February 25 at 3:00 p.m. Access the site and view step-by-step instructions to schedule a conference.

FAFSA Completion Workshop to Assist Senior Parents

Do you need one-on-one assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (the FAFSA form)? Please join Lake Park's Counseling Department at a workshop on Tuesday, February 17 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the West Campus computer lab.

Representatives from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) will be available to help students and families as they file the FAFSA. ISAC is the state agency in Illinois that helps students and families prepare for college and financial aid.

To complete the FAFSA, you will need to bring:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a US citizen)
  • Your most recent federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
  • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
  • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
  • A Federal Student Aid PIN to sign electronically (visit www.pin.ed.gov to obtain one)

AP Test Registration Now Open Online
Advanced Placement testing will occur from May 4 to May 15. New this school year, Lake Park is pleased to offer online AP test registration and payment. To register, visit the registration link that will remain open until the end of the day (11:59 pm) on Friday, March 27. Registration ends after March 27.

The College Board has established this year's fee of $91 per test. For those who prefer to pay by check, complete your registration online but bring in or mail your check to Mrs. Sheila Finstein in the main office at West Campus. Please make checks payable to "Lake Park High School" and provide your student's ID number in the memo line.

Once your child has registered, download a copy of the 2014-2015 Bulletin for AP Students and Parents. The College Board developed this bulletin to help parents and students become familiar with the procedures involved with AP testing, important dates, and grade reporting. A hard copy of this publication is available from Mrs. Finstein at West, and from Mrs. Anne Coppola in the main office at East.

West Campus Schedule Changes for ACT Exam

On Tuesday, March 3, Lake Park will administer the ACT plus writing exam.

Senior students are not required to participate in the ACT this year, so this is a non-attendance day for grade 12.  Read the senior parent letter and view the schedule modification.

ACT is a mandatory assessment required for all grade 11 students in Illinois.  Juniors should plan to arrive at the regular start time of 7:22 a.m.  Buses will pick up students at their normal times and return students immediately upon the completion of testing. ACT prohibits student admission to the test after 8:00 a.m., so students arriving late must take the make-up ACT on Tuesday, March 17

ACT requires all students to attend a special paperwork session prior to testing. On Wednesday, February 25, juniors will report to a designated room at West Campus at the regular start time of 7:22 a.m.  Seniors will start school at 9:00 a.m.   All students will follow an adjusted schedule for the remainder of the day. Read the parent letter and view the schedules for these modified days

* Effective Leaders
* Collaborative Teachers
* Involved Families
* Supportive Environments

* Ambitious Instruction

The survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. You are invited to participate in the parent portion of the survey to help us understand how Lake Park is meeting your expectations and your student's needs. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your student.

Lake Park Athletic Booster Club Seeks Volunteers

Lake Park is proud to be one of the few high schools that do not require athletes to pay a fee to play their sport. The following chair positions are open for the 2015-16 school year:

* Membership

* Sponsorship

* Marketing

* School Store

* Spirit Wear

* Outdoor Concessions-West campus

If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please contact Katie Pall at (630) 893-8142.

Pride in Performance

Congratulations to our Pride in Performance winners for the second grading period:

East Campus
Academics: Kelly Hartnett excels at the highest level in all of her courses.  She is a great classmate who helps others study and prepare for tests.  In her AP Human Geography class, Kelly is part of a group that analyzes homework and assessments.  Her effort in all she does is commendable!

Achievement: Paige Staerkel has had a fabulous sophomore year.  Her grade point average has increased a full point, and she has made a great effort in and out of the classroom to improve as a student.  She has shown that determination and hard work pay off!

Activities: Christopher Ruby has evolved as a solid leader for the Gamers Club.  He consistently steps up for the set-up and breakdown each week.  He has a great attitude and has displayed leadership characteristics that will serve him well in the future.

Athletics: Carson Vance is a freshman on the Varsity Girls' basketball team.  That accomplishment alone is a great statement, but she is also taking on a leadership role as a point guard.  She recently was the leading scorer in Lake Park's big conference win at Naperville North High School.

West Campus
Academics: Brian Bayer is an excellent student who consistently has the highest grade in AP Calculus.  His attitude about the class is exemplary, and the pride he takes in the class is evident each day.

Achievement: Michael Anzuini is a hardworking, conscientious student.  Since freshman year, his grades have improved from a "C" average to almost straight "A's."   Michael has continuously set goals for himself to improve his success and independence in school.  He has accomplished these goals by concentrating his efforts to focus, work hard, and to advocate for himself.  In many classes, Michael even helps other students with class assignments or labs.  He has truly developed into an exemplary student and remarkable young man.

Activities: Gio Basso is the leader of the Lake Park Math Team.   He is consistently at every practice, and Gio personally takes the time to make sure his teammates understand the math problems before moving on to new content.

Athletics: Hanna Toepper organized the entire "Volley for the Cure" volleyball match against Glenbard North High School.  She initiated contact with the other school, the t-shirt purchases, the bake sale, the gifts for the raffle, the decorations for the gym, the enlistment of parents and other players to help with the decorating, selling of the baked goods and staffing the raffle tables during the volleyball match.  With Hanna's hard work and dedication, Lake Park raised $2400 for breast cancer awareness.

Freshman Class Council Sponsors Book Drive

Lake Park's Freshman Class Council is paying it forward through their second annual collection of new and gently used baby books to 6th grade level that will once again benefit Comer Children's Hospital.

Last year's donation of 400 books helped to resurrect Comer's literacy program that aims to provide a take home book for each child who visits an outpatient clinic for a doctor's appointment.  Over 30 percent of school age Chicago children live at or below the poverty line, and only 30 percent of 4th graders in Chicago are proficient in reading. The Comer Literacy program strives to help increase literacy rates in their south side clinic community.

Special thanks to sponsors Julie McDonnell and Leah Macnamara for organizing the book drive with their students, and to the generosity of the Lancer school community for donating 550 books this year.
