Superintendent's Column
This week began with a powerful professional development day for Lake Park staff, one that provided opportunity for active and thoughtful preparation for the unthinkable. On January 26, Roselle Police Department officers-along with 20+ police personnel from surrounding communities, including County and State-facilitated onsite training during Lake Park's Staff Institute (a student non-attendance day). Purposes of the training included increasing awareness of school safety issues and demonstrating several scenarios involving an active threat in the school building. These drills are an important part of our "REDI" planning and comply with a new state law that requires schools to develop and conduct an active shooter drill.
Lake Park is fortunate to have strong relationships with local law enforcement agencies and appreciates the opportunity to partner with these emergency responders to conduct such important drills. Through active participation, staff members have been empowered to make independent decisions with limited information that safeguard students during active threats. The serious engagement of employees during the scenario-based instruction (hide/barricade; run/evacuate; fight/distract) reinforces how invested our faculty and staff are in protecting our students. The debriefing/Q&A session following the drills also demonstrated that teachers are proactively thinking about ways to protect their classrooms, from the configuration of desks and tables to having resources available which may provide additional security and safety.
Following this Institute Day experience, the campuses are continuing to debrief and plan for additional ways to make students even more aware of emergency procedures. The annual designation of "Safety Week" at each building has allowed our staff to communicate expectations of students during lockdown procedures and physically walk the evacuation routes from classrooms. We are committed to educating everyone about the "REDI" plan and ensure their understanding of what to do in an emergency situation.
I commend the entire Lake Park staff and local law enforcement for their professionalism and commitment to training on the Institute Day. The safety and security of our students is the highest priority for our leadership team, and these experiences continually reinforce best practices for preparedness.

Winter Play Takes Center Stage
Lake Park High School proudly presents David Ives' adaptation of The Misanthrope by Moliere, titled The School for Lies. This French farce is wittily written in rhymed couplets and set in Paris, 1666.
The play tells the story of Frank (junior Andrew Anderson) who always speaks his mind with cynical honesty. He tries to demonstrate the evils of lying to his friend Philinte (senior Colin Sommers) on a visit to Celimene, a clever widow (senior Frannie Catalano). The cast is rounded out by a variety of characters in French society and includes senior Troy Chirico, junior Noah Poremba, sophomores Niko Callas and Allison Ford, and freshmen Amanda Brommel and Ben Herring.
"This play is a silly, timeless story about relationships that features physical comedy and lots of play on words," says director Kathy Weber (English/Theatre teacher). "The cast and I have enjoyed working on this production, and look forward to some lively performances."
Tickets can be purchased at the door at East Campus on Thursday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m., after the Night of Fine Dining on Friday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, February 7 at 7:00 p.m. Join the Lake Park Theatre Department for this fast-moving comedy of manners!

Hoops for Heart Fundraising Underway for Feb. 13 Event
Since 1998, Lake Park's Physical Education Department has been raising money for the American Heart Association through a nationally sponsored event called Hoops for Heart. All monies raised for this annual event are donated to the American Heart Association for research in the fight against heart disease.
The format of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in 2004 helped to increase participation and generate more enthusiasm from the student body. In its first year of the new format, Lake Park raised $1,946.75. Since 2004, the PE Department has raised $80,419.82, with the best one-year total at an amazing $16,124.23 in March 2011. Last year, Lancers raised an impressive $13,068.72 through t-shirt sales, concession sales and the basketball tournament.
The PE Department is challenging the Lake Park school community to achieve a new benchmark at year's Hoops for Heart tournament on Friday, February 13. Please consider making a donation via the online fundraising page. Thank you for the tremendous support!
