Superintendent's Column
Although last week was the official start to second semester, the weather once again proved to be a challenge to staying open. The dangerous temperatures and windchills - similar to last year - were the deciding factors as we consulted with our sender school districts, bus transportation company and neighboring high schools throughout DuPage County. We appreciate the understanding of our families and staff members regarding the decision to close school. Occasions like these weather-related closings are a good reminder to keep contact information as current as possible. Please be sure to provide any updates in the Home Access Center (HAC), so that we can continue to communicate through our automated notification system.
For end-of-year planning purposes, please note that the school calendar will need to be extended. Illinois school code requires a minimum of 176 student attendance days. Our 2014-2015 academic calendar contained 177 scheduled days; however, the current balance is 175 due to the two days missed last week. The decision has been made to schedule an additional day on Tuesday, May 26 (following Memorial Day). This modification, subject to change pending additional school closures, means that second semester final exams will be conducted on Thursday, May 21; Friday, May 22; and Tuesday, May 26. Graduation for the Class of 2015 will remain scheduled for Tuesday, May 26.
This week the Illinois 5Essentials Survey site opened providing parents, students and teachers a unique opportunity to have a voice in improving their schools statewide. Lake Park participated in the 5Essentials Survey in the inaugural 2012-2013 administration, and is participating again this year to comply with Illinois State Board of Education legislation. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
* Effective Leaders
* Collaborative Teachers
* Involved Families
* Supportive Environments
* Ambitious Instruction
The survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. Your voluntary participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand how Lake Park is meeting your expectations and your student's needs. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be conducted through March 13, 2015. To take the survey, visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/.
As always, we appreciate your support of our Lancers and look forward to numerous opportunities throughout second semester to see you on campus!

District Phone System Greets Callers with New Options
During winter break, a new districtwide VOIP phone system was installed to improve the ability to communicate within the structure of each school and gather information during a critical incident. The main greeting at (630) 529-4500 welcomes callers and provides an opportunity to self-select:
1. East Campus
2. West Campus
3. Administration Center
5. Athletic Hotline
9. Dial-by-Name Directory
0. Additional Assistance
Once callers make an initial selection, they have convenient choices to direct their call more efficiently to the appropriate staff member. The East Campus and West Campus options include:
1. Attendance Office
2. Main Office
3. Counseling Office
4. Bus Information
5. Athletic Hotline
9. Dial-by-Name Directory
0. Additional Assistance
* Repeat these options
Please note that callers can select an option at any time during the message to direct their call, rather than waiting for the entire recording to finish. Additionally, to bypass a user's voicemail box, press "1" and listen for the tone to leave your message. For your reference, an updated all staff directory is available since some phone numbers have changed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as employees learn to utilize the new system, which provides features and upgrades that benefit all users of the phone system.

Community Connection

The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will present "How Children Succeed! Beyond Smart - How Grit, Curiosity, and Character Help Kids Thrive" at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, at the College of DuPage McAninch Arts Center (the Mac) in Glen Ellyn. The public is invited to this free special event.
Why do some children succeed while others fail? Can character, rather than IQ, be the secret to lasting success?
The story that is often told about childhood and success stresses intelligence over all, with the greatest success coming to those children who score the highest on tests. In this provocative program, New York Times best-selling author Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most for life-long success have much more to do with personality traits such as curiosity, optimism, perseverance and self-control.
Tough will introduce parents to a new generation of researchers and educators who use science to uncover the mysteries that help to mold character. By showing how nature and nurture are intertwined, Tough demonstrates the surprising ways in which parents do - and sometimes do not - prepare their children for successful adulthood, providing a blueprint for how to improve the lives of all children.

Institute Day Training Focuses on Safety and Security
Roselle Police Department officers, along with police personnel from surrounding jurisdictions including the State, will provide training to Lake Park High School employees on Monday, January 26 during a staff institute day. Purposes of the training include increasing awareness of school safety issues and demonstrating several scenarios involving an active threat in the school building.
The training will be held at Lake Park High School West Campus. Since January 26 is an Institute Day, students will not be in attendance during the training. All offices - including the campuses and administration center - will be closed to allow all employees to participate.
Objectives: * Discuss and evaluate response options * Scenario-based instruction: hide/barricade; run/evacuate; fight/distract
The goal of this training is collaboration between the Roselle Police Department and Lake Park High School to empower staff to make independent decisions with limited information that safeguard students during active threats.
